Results update from Jeff

Hey you guys,

First a bit of housekeeping…in the last edition, I reported on results from the Shelburne Fieldhouse races. One of my unpaid informants pointed out that I overlooked Meredith Naughton and Anna Berg in the half marathon results. Both posted strong performances and should be poised to shatter the 2:00:00 barrier next year. (No pressure, ladies.)

See below for the following results in reverse chronological order:
Fallen Leaves 5k #3
OBX Southern Fried Half Marathon
Fallen Leaves 5k #2
New England Interscholastic XC Championship
Vermont XC Championship
Ripton Ridge Run
Mad Dash
Art Tudhope 10k
Onward,

Jeff

Fallen Leaves 5k #3

The Fallen Leaves 5k #3 was held Saturday, November 19 in Montpelier. There were 71 finishers. Special thanks to race director Tim Noonan who was back at the helm after a couple of weekend’s worth of high school coaching duties. Also thanks to the many volunteers who showed up to help at the last opportunity to earn 2016 volunteer credit. If your strategy for winning your age group in the CVR/ORS Race Series depended on someone else failing to volunteer, your hope was in vain. Maybe next year.

CVR age group winners include:
Lori Crotts, 1st F 20-29
Sandy Colvin, 1st F 40-49
Dot Martin, 1st F 50-59
Sue Emmons, 1st F 60-69
Jamie Shanley, 1st M 60-69
Greg Wight, 1st M 70+
Matthew Rutherford was the fastest CVR member in 18:12 for 3rd overall. Lori was 1st F Overall in 18:42. And extra credit goes to Dot and Jamie for winning their respective age groups three weeks in a row!

I missed the first two Fallen Leaves races this year. On Friday night, I was not feeling particularly recovered my half marathon earlier in the week and considered the possibility of not bothering. Andy suggested that it would be fun to see everyone. Guess what? It was. (Feel free to use this trick for yourself the next time you are tempted to not show up.)

There was lots of great crowd support at the event. Boys from the U-32 XC team were there with their loud vuvuzelas. I’m actually not sure of their motivation. Perhaps they were trying to impress the girls from Mount Mansfied Union? I don’t know.

OBX Southern Fried Half Marathon

The Southern Fried Half Marathon was held Sunday, October 13 in Nagshead and Manteo, NC. There were 1,998 finishers (along with 681 finishers in the Outer Banks Marathon). Andy Shuford was 17th M 55-59. Yours truly was 31st M 50-54.

In the early 1900’s,Wilbur and Orville Wright googled the National Weather Service in search of a windy place to test their gliders and prototype airplane. They discovered Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with its frequent wind. If you sign up for a point-to-point race on the island, you know you are taking your chances. We lucked out and had perfect weather for the race. The day before had howling winds and the day after was a cold wash-out.

Vermont XC Championship

The Vermont XC Championship races were held Saturday, November 5 in Thetford. For some reason, most local high school runners opted to compete in this event rather than the more prestigious Fallen Leaves 5k #1. Kids!!!

In the boys’ 5k race, CVR member Stephen Looke was 3rd overall in a time of 16:47 and was first man for U-32. Lapsed CVR member Jeremy Hoyne-Grosvenor was 11th overall in 17:15 and was second man for Montpelier. In the overall team results, U-32 placed 6th, Harwood placed 7th and Montpelier placed 9th out of a field of 40 teams. For Division II only, U-32, Harwood and Montpelier swept the top 3 places.

Art Tudhope 10k

GMAA’s 43rd annual Art Tudhope 10k was held on Saturday, October 1 in Shelburne and Charlotte . There were 91 finishers. Jim Flint was 3rd M 50-59. Jim ran an awesome time of 39:48. Unfortunately for him, Tom Thurston and Jeff Shedd both showed up to race. (The careful observer will note that Tom finished 2nd overall in Leaf Peeper’s Half Marathon the very next day. Jim was 1st M 50-59 in the Leaf Peeper’s 5k. I wonder why Jim didn’t step up to the half marathon?)
