CVR Annual Meeting and New Officers for 2018
Happy Spring! And welcome to a new CVR year. This week, News & Notes is from Andy Shuford, the new CVR president. I now have the honor of sending it each week. No Fake News, believe me!
This past Sunday, we had a great turnout of 32 at the Annual Meeting. In just a little over an hour and a half, we approved a budget, approved two new CVR races and elected a slate of officers. The new officers for this year are:
Vice President-Manny Sainz
One new race approved is the Montpelier Mile, which of course isn’t new. But it was not officially a CVR race before. We are still discussing with the new Onion River Outdoors as to our level of involvement. But the good news is the race will go on as before.
The other new race is the Groton Forest Trail Run on September 8. This is a completely different event for us but we are fortunate to have a committee and race director (Mark Howard) already in place. This is a 100% trail race with a marathon distance and a 15 mile option. The race will be on the CVR website soon, but here are details and sign up information if you can’t wait: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=56251.
The annual meeting ended promptly at 6:15pm after which we enjoyed pizza delivered by Eric Ryea and Manny Sainz mom’s famous apple pie.
Other items of interest from the annual meeting are:
Approved funding of kids and school running programs at similar levels as last year
The Leaf Peepers Rejuvenation committee is planning to move the race back to the original course for 2019. There is work still to be done but the committee is determined to make it happen. The committee is also seeking new members. Let me know if you are interested.
Speaking of Leaf Peepers, this (hopefully) will be the last year you have to run up Perry Hill. So maybe this should be a consideration in your race plans this fall. Last chance for Perry Hill!
And the 35th running of Leaf Peepers this fall will be the last for long time race director Roger Cranse. He has decided to retire after this year. Another reason to run it this year, to thank him for 14 years of service! Thanks Roger!
The 2nd 2018 CVR/Onion River Outdoors Race Series event-Kaynors Sap Run 10K was Sunday in Westford. We had at least 18 CVR runners at this GMAA event. The weather and road conditions were the best in recent memory with no ice or mud. Unfortunately, the hills were still there. Runners enjoyed the famous cider donuts and raffle prizes after the race. While there are no age group awards for this one, Donna Smyers was the only CVR runner to be first in an age group. This means 100 points for the race series. But since the race series rules now are based off the top CVR runner in the age group, there were a lot of other 100 point winners on Sunday: Kim Caldwell, Chris Andresen, Kari Bradley, Lori Howe, Beth Daut, Colin Clifford, Bob Murphy and Sal Acosta. Results are at http://www.gmaa.net.
Lots of opportunities to get out and run in the Spring weather:
The CVR Winter Long Run is back again this Saturday at 9:30AM at the Red Hen in Middlesex. Nina Aitken is hosting and if you are interested, email her at email@example.com. Will be dirt roads, pavement or a combination depending on conditions.
Unofficial Fun Runs at 5:30 on Tuesdays. Remember the fun runs are for everyone, including walkers. There was discussion at the Annual Meeting to make sure walkers know they are welcome.
Wednesday Night Speedwork at 6pm at the Montpelier High School track or bike path. Matt Rutherford has declared it “under new management” so look out! Actually, Matt plans no changes from the format set up by the departing Steve Hill. We are sorry to see Steve go but wish him well in California.
And of course three upcoming CVR races: Mutt Strut on Sunday, April 22, Paul Mailman Montpelier Ten Mile and 5K on Saturday, April 28 and Adamant 20 Miler and Relay on Sunday, May 6. Check the website for details.
Phyllis Arsenault Berry would like to form a CVR (or non-CVR paddlers OK too) for the Dragon Boat Festival in August. It takes 20 paddlers and one drummer–up to 10 men and 10 or more women to form a team. I know June Burr has done this before. Contact Phyllis: firstname.lastname@example.org, if interested.
Norm Robinson will be returning to VT with a couple of teams from Nashville (which somehow include Tim Noonan) to run a new Ragnar Relay trail race at Mt. Ascutney August 3-4. He encourages CVR to field some teams to join him in the fun.
CVR Fun Run every Tuesday, May to October, at 5:30 pm. Unofficial runs are started now! (weather dependent)
CVR Speed Workout Wednesdays at 6 pm. Meet near the MHS track on the bike path warmed up by 6. Contact Matt Rutherford if you have questions and want to be added to the email list. No more headlamps!
