Eight Race Series Races Down, Seven to Go

CVR Birthdays this Week!
Happy Birthday to: Kim Caldwell, Lori Lacroix, Deirdre Ellerson, Cindy Gardner-Morse and Alana Bonner

The 40th Annual Bear Swamp Run on Saturday was the 8th CVR/ORO Race Series event. 57 runners enjoyed ideal conditions on Saturday. Lots of competition: particularly in Male 30-39 and Female 50-59. Thanks to Tim Noonan and his volunteers for an excellent event!

Jim Flint has updated the standings after this race. If you see any corrections, let Jim know. Seven more races to go; the next is Berlin Pond Five Miler. So not too late to get 6 races!

The first annual CVR Summer Outing on Sunday was a fantastic time. We had 13 enthusiastic participants including one of the newest members (George, at 9 months). We enjoyed Boulder Beach and beautiful weather, trail running, cycling, kayaking, swimming and, of course great burgers supervised by grill master Maryke Gillis. Can’t wait for next year!

Speaking of social events, it is time for another Julio’s night and let’s plan on this coming Tuesday, July 24 after the Fun Run. As usual we will take a headcount before the run and phone in a reservation. Hope you can make it!

Lots of CVR folks (at least 6 I think) running in the Vermont 100 this weekend. Good luck everyone!

Groton Forest Trail Run
Mark Howard reports that the race has about 60 registered. 100 is the limit (both races combined). I have heard folks talking about registering and now you have an incentive to do it soon: a price increase August 1! The 26.5 mile goes to $75 then and the 15 mile to $50. So if you know you are going to run, register now and save $10-$15.

CVR Newsletter
As noted last week, Maryke Glllis has replaced Bob Howe as newsletter editor, effective with the next one, the Summer 2018 newsletter. Please send her stories and photos from your racing adventures this summer. The deadline is August 3. Note to VT100 runners: your experience in the race would be a great newsletter article.

And here is a trivia question regarding the newsletter: Bob Howe has been our faithful editor for 8 years. But who did he replace? First to send me the correct answer will win something (don’t expect anything great, but who knows?).

Barre Heritage Trail Race
The annual Millstone trail race will be here before you know it, Sunday, July 29 at 10am at the Barre Town Forest parking area. Jackie Jancaitis needs volunteers for this race, so if you can help, contact Jackie.

Race to the Top of Vermont
The race is Sunday, August 26 and is annual event for many CVR members. After July 31, the rates go up again. But another way to save is to organize a team of at least five and the race fee is only $40 each. Sal Acosta is putting together a team and needs a couple more to get five and the lower rate. So contact Sal if you are interested.

Next CVR Meeting August 20
Monday, August 20 is the next CVR meeting in Brookfield at the Old Town Hall. The potluck will begin at 6pm and the meeting at 6:30pm. We will have an informal run before the meeting at 5pm. The Old Town Hall is located on Sunset Pond so there are swimming opportunities too. Mark your calendars and come early for the run/swim if you can!

Race results
I know we are a running club and I am about to give you a bunch of triathlon results. But interesting nonetheless…

Ben Kidder swept all three Elmore Tris, including the last one July 12. And that is after doing Stowe Bike Club time trials the day before…

John Martin, Dot Martin, John Valentine and Donna Smyers traveled to the Finger Lakes of New York for the Musselman Triathlon last weekend. On Saturday was the Mini Mussel (sprint distance). Donna did the sprint as a “warm up” for the half iron distance event (the Mussleman) the next day. She was first in her age group. Dot was second in hers. But the showdown was in the male 65-69 where John Valentine edged John Martin by 21 seconds for 1st and 2nd place. And the next day, Donna was first in the age group again in the Musselman, and with combined times from the previous day, second overall female in the Double Mussel. Congratulation everyone! Tell us when the John vs. John rematch will be!
