News you can use

Sunday Dot and John Martin and Eric Ryea and I met at Joe’s Pond to try out the new Danville-St J section of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, we were surprised to run into Lance Parker in the parking area. Lance, we learned, was biking back from backpacking in the White Mountains, including a summit of Mt. Washington on Friday. Do you remember how windy it was on Friday? I knew he was tough following up 2nd place in a 50 miler one weekend with a 5th OA in a 100 the next, but he wouldn’t even let me take some of the weight out of his panniers for his final 30 miles.

Speaking of new rail trails, I’m a big fan of rail trails both for running and biking. If you are too, come to an informational meeting put on by the Cross Vermont Trail Association to raise money for a bridge across the Winooski. The presentation is at the Maple Corner Community Center Nov. 15, 6-8 pm. That’s either tomorrow or today, depending on when you read this. There will be snacks! Here is info on the project: Cross Vermont Trail.

The first Fallen Leaves 5K was a bit slower than prior years since the high school teams were all in Thetford. Several locals and CVR members were standouts at the State xc Championships coached by CVR members Tim Noonan, Tim Shea (MHS) and Andrew Tripp (U32). Youngsters still dominated at Fallen Leaves though since a 14 year old from Rutland was 1st F and an 18 year old from Toronto was 2nd M. I kept running into 5K participants (who I chased to the finish) Sandy Colvin and Rima Carlson and families at the Wellness Fair (aka free food samples) at City Hall afterwards. I also ran into Jeff and Andy who saw fit to skip the 5K, but not the free food. Actually I ran into them and Dot Helling at the Montpelier Indoor Rec and Aquatics table. If you have interest/opinions on the need for a rec facility in Montpelier, take this survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/FHB76BQ. Seems like there is a big hole in the indoor fitness options within walking distance for Montpelier these days.

November–Fallen Leaves & Club Meeting

Jim Flint has posted the final CVR/ORS Series standings. They are final except some of you will disappear (poof, you are gone!) if you don’t volunteer at one of the Fallen Leaves races–even 2 of you who currently rank #1 in the AG. If you do not have an X in the volunteer column, don’t wait any longer! You know who you are and if you don’t, maybe one of your running friends will let you know (hint, hint, give them a nudge). Remember, it is not just being included in the final results at stake, it is also getting free dinner in January at the Annual Volunteer & Awards Dinner. Contact Tim Noonan to volunteer at any of the Fallen Leaves 5K’s. He still needs volunteers at all of them.
And as always, please send Jim Flint a nice note to explain any error you see in the postings.

The next CVR Meeting is Nov. 7–that’s next Monday! Michael Chernick has volunteered to host the meeting at 330 Cityside Dr. #75 in Montpelier. Pot luck at 6, meeting at 6:30.
