Mt. Washington Road Race
The CVR Women’s Team of Donna Smyers, Dot Helling and Ann Bushey won the “Veterans” Division at Mt. Washington on Saturday. Veterans is an age-designated category; it has nothing to do with military service. They also did well (third) in the next age category down “Seniors”. Donna was first in the 60-64 age group with a time of 1:40:21 and Dot was second in the 65-69 with 2:00:13. On an age-graded basis, Donna’s time was 2nd overall and Dot’s 7th overall. Other CVR members running were Darrel Lasell and Mike Gillis. Here are results.

From the Archives
A lot of interesting things looking back 35 years at the August 1984 CVR newsletter. Back then, the Capital City Stampede was held in July and was called the Howard Bank 10K. In 1984, there were 175 finishers. The winning time was 30:44. A very fast race; 46 runners were under 40 minutes! The demographics were also different than today as there were only 35 women participants. And even stranger: no runners in the men 60-69 division! Also in the newsletter is a race report for the Stowe 8 Miler. It was hot (nothing new there) and 32 CVR runners participated, most running under 1 hour. Tim Noonan was the top CVR runner and ran 47:35; that was only good for 59th overall. Nowadays that would be top 5. Finally, the most interesting news is a new race coming in October called the Leaf Peepers Half Marathon. The CVR President appeals to the membership to volunteer for the race which is sponsored by Lash Furniture, the Waterbury Lyons (sic) and CVR.
