Winter Long Run

This week’s Winter Long Run will be at  the Berlin Travel Service Center on Paine Turnpike at 9:30am.  The run will be around Berlin Pond with longer distance available. For more information or to tell him will be there, contact this week’s host Jeff Prescott

Barre Town Spring Run Race Director

I am looking for a race director for the Barre Town Spring Run, which is May 18 this year. If you ever thought you might want to try race directing, this is a great event to start with. First, you have a guaranteed big attendance with the kids’ running program. Next, you have a contained course that has no traffic issues.  Finally, it is a great event that supports kids’ running and the Barre Town Rec Dept.  I will offer all the assistance you need, such as setting up the event with the Town, race day preparation, course set up, volunteers, etc.  The job mostly involves directing the volunteers and runners on race day.  There isn’t much up front work.  So if you are interested in directing a race, this is a great opportunity.  Send me an email and you can get started!

Annual Meeting

The CVR Annual Meeting will be Sunday, March 17.  The meeting will be at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center at 58 Barre St.  We will meet at 4:30pm for the meeting portion and then finish up between 6 and 6:30pm, at which time we will have pizza brought in.  Also, feel free to bring any dishes you wish to share.

Note that this year’s meeting is on St. Patrick’s Day.  This means you should wear green to the meeting and even better, a green St. Patrick’s Day race shirt.  The benefit? I will hold a drawing for a special prize.  All who wear green are entered (anything counts) and those who have the SPD race shirt get extra chances.  More contest details to come. Dig out those old shirts!

The March newsletter deadline is approaching since it comes out before the annual meeting.  Maryke Gillis would like your contributions by March 9.  Contributions to the past few newsletters have been great, let’s keep it up!

U-32 Track Coach

U-32 is looking for a coach this spring as Andrew Tripp is in Greece this semester.  He says: “The basic commitment is 2:45-4:30 M-F with some Saturdays and evenings for meets. The official season starts the third week of March and runs till first week of June.  I have several years worth of workouts and am happy to help with schedules and progressions that have worked well in the past if that helps.”  Let me know if you are interested and I will forward it on.

Training Rules that Still Apply

For newer runners and old-timers who need a refresher, Runner’s World recently resurrected (from 2005) their 25 Golden Rules of Running.  I’m sure I read this back in 2005 when I actually read magazines.

Old Newsletter Notes

Going back to May 1981, CVR President Bob Murphy explores the topic “Are Fun Runs Really Fun?”.  This is still a timely topic. But in 1981, the Fun Runs were really races of 2, 4 or 6 miles and the times reflected that.  Bob was addressing why attendance at Fun Runs dropped from 120 to135 in the summer of 1979 to 70 to 80 in 1980. Bob’s idea is to also cater to runners who run more for the social and fitness aspect versus competition. This dilemma still exists today and probably even more so.  So Bob threw out some suggestions to liven up the Fun Runs and boost participation: handicap races, predict your time races or team events.  I don’t know what Fun Run organizers Darragh Ellerson and Newton Baker decided to do for that season. I’ll have to read a further month too see what happened.
