A warm welcome to the new year…

It’s only a couple of days into 2023 and we already have one race under our race belt.

On the last day of 2022 Race Director Jennifer Dickinson orchestrated our annual New Year’s Eve 5K through the streets of Montpelier. Thank you Jennifer! The course took runners across State Street, one of Montpelier’s busiest, not once, but twice. This was accomplished without incident with the help of race volunteers like Greg Gerdel who stood in the intersection of State and Bailey directing traffic. Thank you Greg and the rest of the volunteers! The race had 108 finishers (results: nye5k-2022-combined (cvrunners.org) ).

Dylan Flewelling from Oakland ME was the first male in a time of 17:48 for a 5:44 pace.  Alicia Freese from Tunbridge VT was the first female in a time of 18:30 for a pace of 5:58. Patrick Killoran, of Randolph VT was the first non-binary runner in a time of 29:38 for a pace of 9:33. With warm temperatures (for December 31st) and an essentially ice free course, conditions were right for some fast times. Five racers didn’t disappoint as they were able to set new course records for their age groups. These runners were Joel Thornton-Sherman (M, 1-13), Alicia Freese F, 30-39), Kasie Enman (F, 40-49), Sarah Pribram (F 50-59), & Erika Campbell (F, 70-79).

Below are John, Jessica, Andrew, and Joel Thornton-Sherman at the New Year’s Eve race. Joel (right) broke his older brother Evan’s M1-13 age group record with a time of 18:24. This is a fast family!

Winter Runs are HERE!
Winter Group Runs (WGRs) are here! The third WGR was truly a winter run but already that snow storm of a few weeks ago feels like a dream – a few folks gamely made their way on the snowy roads, thanks to our hosts Keely and Mark! Let’s hope the snow is on its way back soon….

Meanwhile this Saturday’s run will be hosted by Mack Gardner-Morse in Calais, and it looks to be decent conditions but still some uncertainty in the forecast so we will see! More info and sign-up sheet are here. We will send out more details in a Thursday email blast to the WGR listserv- if you were not on it last year but want to join that list, email Donna Smyers or Heather Tomlins.

Race Series
John has posted the final race series results on the website. Joe Merrill gets a huge THANK YOU for handling the spreadsheet to track all the results. Head here cvroro race series – Central Vermont Runners (cvrunners.org) to check out who did what.

Trail Running
Mark informed me that trail running has gone into hibernation for the winter. For those who like to be on trails year-round, I encourage you to look into a set of micro-spikes from Onion River Outdoors. The folks there can also suggest a wide range of trails to explore and how best to do it.

Volunteers

  • The Volunteer List by Race Number on the homepage of the website shows all volunteers for this year and the race at which they volunteered.
  • The Alphabetic Volunteer List on the homepage of the website is the list that establishes eligibility for the annual dinner and for the race series.
  • Anyone that has volunteered for a race this year should check to confirm that they are on the  list.
  • Please have anyone with questions about the lists contact me by email at info@cvrunners.org or check with the race director of the race at which they volunteered.

If you use the club timing clock, it’s important it be returned the next day. The clock is used for a lot of events other than club races. It’s club policy that if the clock is requested for a non-CVR event, a CVR member must be present to ensure proper handling.
