News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Susannah Gravel, Paschal DeBlasio, Barbara Flint, Thomas Hogeboom, Andy Shuford, Kate MacLean, John Thornton-Sherman, & Joel Thornton-Sherman!

Greetings from your sedentary president in Adamant,

I say “sedentary” as I had my other hip replaced last Wednesday and am not moving around too much yet. Having gone through this process last December I’m aware this is only temporary and am looking forward to being out Tuesday evenings at the fun runs (walking) in the near future. In the mean time, I have plenty of time to sit and ponder the questions of the universe.  One of those is how the club addresses/welcomes people with disabilities. My thoughts were directed to this topic, not only due to my own disability, but also the passing of Rick Hoyt (thanks Bob M for alerting me to this). In the 5/23/23 Times Argus there is an article on his passing.  Rick Hoyt is a well-known name among those who have run the BAA Marathon. He was a disabled (cerebral palsy, and a quadriplegic) man whose father Dick Hoyt pushed him in a wheelchair through the course for many years. Rick died at the age of 61. Additionally, I learned that a person with a physical disability who had asked to participate in a CVR race last year was denied that opportunity. The race director felt they could not ensure the safety of the person as well as other competitors due to lack of volunteers, experience, and course terrain.

As in addressing runner gender, we’re not talking large numbers of disabled runners. The Vermont City Marathon (which is this coming Sunday) had less than a dozen handcyclists and pushchair competitors last year out of several thousand entrants. By comparison, the Adamant Half Marathon had 57 runners.  I don’t want to create an other barrier to any person wanting to participate.   To make sure we continue to support all competitors who have the gumption to put themselves out there, I’ve reached out to Vermont adaptive ski and sports organization for their support and expertise. We may not get many disabled entrants, but even one will be a victory for that person.

It seems a busy time in the running world as we transition to summer.  A couple of weeks John Martin was in N.C.  John did a half ironman at the White lake Half ironman  It went well.  He persevered despite the heat and won his age group. It was the White Lake pro am half Ironman , White Lake N.C.  John’s segments were: Swim 1.2, Bike 56, run 13.1 flat with some wind, 86 degrees. Nice job John!

Charlie Windisch wrote me to mention the club had some representation at last Saturday’s GMAA Pump it Up 5 Miler (This is a nice out and back on dirt roads). Donna Smyers, John Valentine and myself ran on a beautiful morning. There may have been other CVR folks that I missed.

Beth Daut  signed up and ran the Mountain Goat 10 miler in Syracuse…..have to say they don’t know what a real hill is, but it was a fun and well supported event.

Barre Town Spring Run Start!

The Barre Town Spring Run was this past weekend. Even though the course had to be slightly modified, there were still 138 finishers. Anne Treadwell was the first female in a time of 22:18. Ben Taska was the first male in a time of 16:57. Rory Levi Boston was the first non-binary runner in a time of 37:07.

Club Meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for the afternoon of June 4th so mark your calendars now. The meeting will be held in Northfield in the Community Room (75 S Main Street, Northfield). Thanks Kim for finding the space. We’ll meet at 3:00 PM. We are attempting to set up a zoom meeting. I’ll let you know next week about the details. If anyone has any agenda items, please send them to me. Thanks.

Membership Renewal – Reminder

There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.
Not sure when your membership is due for renewal?
• check your membership card (contact Graham if you need a new one)
•check when your membership expires by logging in to the CVR website. (Here are the instructions  to log in)

Other runs
FUN RUN: Day Light Saving time has happened and Spring is here!  People are showing up Tuesday evenings to enjoy roads and company through running and walking in rain or shine. The sunny weather is bringing out the runners. Come join us!

The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

Volunteers

  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
  • All of the remaining races for 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online using the link on the homepage, so please support CVR’s races and the race directors by volunteering now. Contact John Hackney with any questions about volunteering.

Race Series
It’s a new year and Joe and John are the ones handling the race series tracking. Folks have until June to join the club for early races to count, so the race series tracking won’t be posted until then. Adamant Half Marathon will be the 4th event of 13 in the series after the NYE 5K, Kaynor’s Sap Run, and Paul Mailman 10 Miler. So far, Darrel Lasell is the only CVR member to have done all of the 1st 3!

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.

100 on 100
Vermont’s 100 on 100 Relay Race is AUGUST 12, 2023

Round up your closest friends and prepare to take on 100 miles of scenic Vermont terrain–while you make an endless supply of memories! The 100 on 100 Relay is a challenging relay where friends converge from across the country to complete 100 miles together along Vermont’s historic Route 100. Push beyond your limits, lean on your teammates, and complete something extraordinary. Plus, we’ll be having an epic after-party at the finish line with delicious food, live music, and beer (21+).
Note for the 100 on 100:
I have a spot for the 100 on 100 but unfortunately we can’t do it due to a wedding that day. They will not refund us, but I can transfer the registration. I wanted to reach out and see anyone is interested in doing the race that hasn’t signed up yet that we could transfer to. Looks like the current price is $799, but we only paid $650, so they would get a deal too! If interested, you can reach me directly at this email. mlmannino@gmail.com
Thanks! Michele

So this is happening!

I am hoping to run my first 100 mile race at the Vermont 100 Endurance Race and at the same time raise some $$$ for a great cause. Some of you know the story of my eye injury and my mantra of “I GET to do this” so I feel incredibly lucky to be able to attempt this BIG scary goal. (If you don’t know my story, check out the link to my fundraising page below.)

This run feels extra special as all the proceeds from the race fees benefit Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports, which provides sports and recreational programs to people with all sorts of disabilities. The VT 100 is also the world’s first trail and ultra race to support and recognize “visually” and mobility impaired athletes with their own division. How cool is that!

I have the opportunity to raise funds for the race, so if you are feeling like supporting a great cause, here is your chance.

Thank you !!!
