CVR Birthdays this week:
Happy Birthday to: Cale Ellingson!
Greetings from a classical Adamant,
The Adamant music school is in session so those of us who live in the village are having to suffer the sounds of classical piano music drifting through the air.
There wasn’t a CVR race this past weekend but that didn’t stop some of our members from getting in their strides elsewhere. Darrell and Cheryl Lasell both rain the egg race up in Fairfax.
Joining them was Bob Murphy.
You’ll notice both Darrell and Bob are wearing their New England 65+ Runners Club shirts. Reach out to Darrell if you’d like more information on that club. There are a larger number of members outside the state. Darrell, along with Newton Baker (current VT State Director) and Zeke Zucker (our Vice President) are the state representatives to this 800+ member running group.
Additionally, this past weekend were the National Triathlon competitions in Milwaukee WI. Donna Smyers made the trek (by train) and finished third in the Olympic distance and first in the Sprint. Congrats Donna!
The next CVR race is the Berlin Pond 5 miler on August 17th. A great race around the pond. You can register on-line now through the CVR website.
The race directors for the Groton Forest Trail run issued the following statement:
Due to the impact of the July 10th storms that brought catastrophic flooding and extreme water damage to many communities across Vermont, including many of the towns that surround the Groton State Forest, we are regretfully, and with a heavy heart, cancelling the Groton Forest Trail Run for 2023.
For anyone who doesn’t know – Central Vermont was hit very hard by these storms. Montpelier and Barre were essentially buried underwater, leaving local businesses with inches of mud and piles of trash to clean up. In Marshfield and Cabot, the water destroyed homes, turned pastures into gravel fields and demolished both dirt roads and trails.
We have been working with the Groton State Forest Park Staff, who gave us an assessment of the current damage to their trails and roadways, including the Groton Forest Trail Run courses. We were told overall the courses are extremely muddy and wet, with some blow downs and washouts. In order for us to run the race, we would need to put in significant volunteer hours to make the routes safe for runners.
Club Meeting
The next meeting is August 28th. This will be a potluck beginning at 5:30 with the formal meeting beginning at 6:00 PM. Don Singer has graciously agreed to host the meeting at his home located at 262 Hill St in Barre. (Thanks Don)
Please send me agenda items.

Not sure when your membership is due for renewal?
• check your membership card (contact Graham if you need a new one)
•check when your membership expires by logging in to the CVR website. (Here are the instructions to log in)
• contact Graham and he can confirm your renewal date

Vermont Special Olympics Track & Field
Do you have 2 hours/week and some running, jumping and/or throwing enthusiasm to share?
Please consider supporting local athletes by volunteering to help coach Central Vermont Special Olympics Track & Field this summer!
No special coaching experience is necessary, just availability and enthusiasm (although anyone with a little experience or interest in throws and jumps could help there).
The fun, low-key practices will be Tuesday evenings at the U-32 track for 8 weeks, starting next week (July 25) and leading up to the festive Fall Games on Sept. 16.
For more info on joining in, please contact Ellen Riley, jrervt@aol.com or Anne Treadwell, ac98@cornell.edu. Thank you!
Fun Run
“While the “Disaster Recovery Trailer City” blocks the Fun Run usual starting line, the group is continuing to meet in the same parking lot and run on Green Mountain Dr past the original Fun Run start at the Liquor Control Building to access the path. The distances end up the same as if you start at the usual start.
Other runs
The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes. Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning
Volunteers
- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
- All of the remaining races for 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online using the link on the homepage, so please support CVR’s races and the race directors by volunteering now. Contact John Hackney with any questions about volunteering.
Race Series
Joe has updated the race series. Check it out on the website.
Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.
Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.
