News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Kari Bradley, Donald Singer, Jonnie Dunne, Carl Etnier, & Peter Maurais!

Happy Leap Year from Adamant!

The club has a member whose birthday is February 29th. Since their actual birthday only occurs every four years, do they get to choose to race in their annual age or the age dependent on when they can celebrate on the actual day? As February 29th occurs only once every four years, I will find a moment to do something helpful with the extra day we have for my community here in Adamant. For me, that will probably be walking Sodom Pond Road and picking up cans and bottles that have been exposed by the melting snow. I encourage each of you to do something for your community with the extra time we have this year.

The latest edition of The Bridge has a front page picture of CVR club member Brian Bushey racing at the FIS World Cup competition in Minneapolis earlier this year. As a CVR runner, Brian has been a race series winner. It’s great to see him doing so well.

I had two people step up and request to be considered for the executive committee positions at large over the past week. The two are Anne Treadwell and Dot Helling. Both are great people with long running histories. Anne recently moved back to the area after living in the Burlington area. She was very active with GMAA. Dot has been involved with CVR almost from its inception.

This leaves the club executive committee one person short. While there’s primarily email’s to read and no public speaking requirement, the club needs a full executive committee to operate well. Please reach out to me with questions about what’s involved at: andresen41@gmail.com

Sunday, March 24th is our next club meeting. The meeting will be held from 4-6PM and will be hosted by Holly Fowler and Scott Richardson. Their house is located at 67 Bliss Rd, Montpelier. Holly requests people park along the street (odd side), so as to not box in the driveway.

Here’s a rundown on the people who currently volunteer to keep this club operating.
The current members of the executive committee:
President – Chris Andresen
Vice President – Kim Caldwell
Finance – John Valentine
Secretary – Cheryl Lasell

Winter Group Runs
We had a good crew out in the cold in Middlesex last weekend (likely last Middlesex WGR for the season, but never say never!). This weekend we are going to be in Calais for a run hosted by Mark Howard. More info and the WGR sign-up sheet are here. We will send out more details in a Thursday email blast to the WGR listserv.

There are two slots left for hosts this season (March 16 and 30), so If you’ve been thinking about hosting this season, now is the time to sign up on the google sheet here. Note that hosting doesn’t mean you must have the crew over to your home (although that’s certainly welcome!) – it can also mean suggesting a run and meeting spot (ideally a place with a coffee shop or general store nearby for after). So if you have a run you’d like to suggest sign up to “host” and Heather will reach out ahead of your selected date to work out the details. Thank you!

Trail Running
If you’re interested, a group runs up Spruce Mt in Plainfield Sunday mornings. They start at 7. Keep wearing your orange.

Fun Run
Official fun runs have not started yet.   A day is now lengthening by roughly 3 minutes with the length of a day over 11 hours! Daylight savings time change is March 10th. We move the clocks ahead. This will give us more light at the end of the days, but don’t get lax with wearing your bright clothes and lights.  Keep visible to Keep safe.

Membership Renewal – Reminder

Stan reports we have 129 members who have an expiration of 3/31/2023.

There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.

They’ll run and/or walk 1 or 2 miles down the bike path and then return back to the pub. (or any other distance you want)
We will gather after at the Pub for a drink and a snack (bar food)

Richmond Trail Running Club
Richmond Trail Running Club is offering a WFA course tailored to trail runners. We have had the course open to our members for a few weeks, and now we are planning to open registration to all the other run clubs we know. Here is the registration link. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/solo-wilderness-first-aid-and-cpr-with-rtrc-tickets-780230348977?aff=oddtdtcreator

The dates are April 6th and 7th, and the venue is the East Monitor Barn in Richmond. Details are in the link. We would love to have some of the CVR community join us. The registration is open to anybody, but we are thinking we’ll keep it exclusive to run clubs for the next two weeks before Andrea Kane (our instructor) opens registration to the public on her page.

Other News

Hi All,
John Hackney is setting up a training for timing using Runscore at his house on March 23rd in the afternoon (that’s the day before the Annual Meeting). I’m trying to remember who has said they might be interested. We’d love to get 3-5 people trained so we have some good depth to the team.

Donna Smyers (dosmyers@gmail.com)

Charlie Windisch is currently reading a great book called “The Perfect Mile” by Neal Bascomb. (It’s been out since 2004 but still a good read). The story goes back to 1952, a time when no one had broken the 4 minute mile, and focuses on Roger Bannister, John Landy and Wes Santee. Fast forward to 2024 and we learn that Evan Thornton Sherman broke the four minute barrier (3:59:81). Breaking 4 minutes is the standard now for any good male miler. But even more impressive according to Charlie is the effort by Englishman Josh Kerr over the weekend at the Millrose Games in the two mile run. Josh ran a few tenths of a second over 8 minutes! Unbelievable.

Running Pod Cast
Tim Noonan recommended a pod cast to me while at the awards dinner. It’s called “Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara” It’s two Olympic runners sitting down and talking running. I just started it and am finding it engaging. Worth a listen.

The Governor’s Corporate Cup race committee is looking for new members.  The current committee includes Leslie Davis (chair), Mike Feulner, Pam Chisholm, Patty Turley, Jeff Bourdean, and Dot Helling. This year’s corporate cup will take place on Thursday, May 16th. Please email dothelling@gmail.com for more information.
