CVR Birthdays this week:
Happy Birthday to: Pam Erickson, Amy Holibaugh (new age group!), Meredith Naughton, Tim Noonan, Phyllis Tillinghast (new age group!), and Natalia Hayes!
Hello from Montpelier,
Well it only took me a month but I got to updating the newsletter, and it’s now time to publish and I left my little preamble for last! So this week it’s short and sweet, because you don’t need a musing from me, you will want to read through all the newsy updates packed into this email instead! One note – I’m going to send out a separate email later this week with an update on the June club meeting, including date, call for agenda items, and to solicit a member to host the meeting. Be on the lookout for that update soon!
Read on for updates including our Green Up team’s haul, CVR members out crushing it at regional races, CVR race updates (including the unfortunate cancellation of the Barre Town Spring Run), among other great updates. I also want to call attention to a new CVR Member perk – Onion River Outdoors is now offering CVR members a 15% discount on running-related apparel! Read below for details and how to access this incredible and generous offer from our long-time partner and sponsor.
Please feel free to reach out anytime with information you’d like to see featured, I’ve gotten lots of tidbits to share, and also welcome photos and stories from your adventures out in the running world. Looking forward to hearing more!
Warmly,
Heather Tomlins
CVR Green Up Day a Success!
Thanks to our intrepid group of ten volunteers: Dot Helling, Maureen Carr and Tim Noonan, Diane Jones, Doreen Audette, Jim Rohr, Fred Pond, Donna Smyers, and Cindy and Mack Gardner-Morse! This crew was able to Green Up most of the Fun Run route from the start on the bike path to the Three Mile Bridge. A big thank you to all the volunteers for coming up and helping to Green Up! 12 Green Up garbage bags, 7 tires, 4 sleeping bags, one bucket with trash, a few pieces of a sofa, and a few other fun surprises. Great work team! We appreciate your efforts very much.
Recent Race Results – Members out in Regional Races
We had a surprisingly race-free weekend in the central Vermont area, but that didn’t stop CVR members from getting out there and competing in the region. Congratulations to John Martin (1st, M70-79) and Dot Martin (2nd, W60-69) for their age group wins in the Maine Coast 5K! And as Joe notes, he and Katie “also participated” in races, but failed to take credit enough for them both – Katie’s return to running and a great performance in the 5K and Joe finished his second marathon! Great job to all!
Upcoming Races and Club Volunteer Needs
Update on the CVR Race Schedule – due to unforeseen circumstances, the Barre Town Spring Run that was scheduled for May 18 has been cancelled this year. However – for those itching to get out and run a race that day, Spaulding High School is hosting its Crimson Crawl, a 5K fundraiser for UVM Children’s Hospital. More info here!
- This Saturday, May 11, 10:00am: CVR’s Adamant Half Marathon and Relay, Adamant. This is a CVR/ORO race series race. Donna has enough volunteers but if you’re still interested in helping, just send her an email at dosmyers@gmail.com. Thank you!
- Don’t forget the Double Dirt Challenge will be back this year after all! Craftsbury will host the Genny Tenny on Sunday, May 12 (Mother’s Day) and runners who compete in both the Adamant Half and the Genny Tenny will be eligible for a special finisher’s medal (and bragging rights). More details on the Adamant Half website above and the Genny Tenny website (discounted entry to Genny Tenny for DD participants!).
- Saturday, June 8, 9am: CVR’s Capital City Stampede 10K and 5K Power Walk, Montpelier. This is a CVR/ORO race series race – the fastest 10K course in Vermont! This race is also shared with the Vermont Senior Games Association. New this year is a 5K Power Walk option that will be open to ages 10 and up. Volunteers are needed! Jim is looking for course safety monitors, finish line crew, and aid station volunteers! Please reach out to Jim directly at jimflintvt@gmail.com or sign up under the Members section of the CVR website.
CVR cannot put on races without volunteer support, and your help is needed. Please volunteer now to help the race directors fill necessary jobs and plan for full race day support. Volunteer now online using the Volunteer link on the CVR website homepage at https://cvrunners.org OR by email to the race directors above.
Fun Runs –> Other Runs –>Trail Season!
Trail Running – first run will be May 25!
Mark Howard is starting to get this year’s trail runs organized but he needs your help! If you’d like to be a host, please take a look at the sign up sheet here. The first trail run is planned for May 25 and a host is still needed, though there are now hosts for a couple of runs in June. Mark has also started a Google Group as a way to get information out – if you’d like to receive the Trail Running details every week (separate from this update), please email Mark.
Tuesday Fun Runs
Tuesday Fun Runs set off every Tuesday at 5:30pm from the DoL parking lot. Starting this month we will be trying something new. We will alternate meeting up at a local restaurant/watering hole with a second meetup in the month at a local park, potluck-style! Since the weather is still making up its mind about what season it is, we’ll start with an indoor option for the 2nd Tuesday, and celebrate late spring with an outdoor gathering in Hubbard Park for the last Tuesday. Special thanks to Merill Creagh for her legwork to make park meetups happen! And thanks to Darrel Lassel for continuing to be our local social organizer too. For May, the meetup schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday May 14: Bear Naked Growler (Darrel confirmed that Penzo’s will deliver pizza there without delivery charge, and that the group can also bring its own chips/snacks if preferred)
- Tuesday, May 28: Hubbard Park (see some Do’s and Don’ts on the Park Gathering here)
- As a note, for these post-Fun Run gatherings, Fun Run will still start/end at the DoL parking lot, and participants who wish to join the gatherings will be responsible for getting themselves to the meeting spot!
