CVR Birthdays this week:
Happy Birthday to: Susannah Gravel, Thomas Hogeboom, Kim Kendall, Andy Shuford, Kate MacLean (new age group!), Steven Abraham (new age group!)!
Hello from Montpelier,
A surprise thunderstorm rolled through as I was starting to look at the clock to get out to Fun Run today, and then a late work task landed in my lap and the next thing I knew, the sun had returned and it was almost 6! I managed to get changed and head to the DoL and get my run in, waving hello to those who managed to be on time on their way back. And then Darrel had brought fresh watermelon to share, which was very welcome on this humid evening. This is what I really love about this club – seeing friends, catching up, even when you show up a little later than you had planned. Hopefully my time management and the weather will cooperate more to join the group next Tuesday, and don’t forget we will have our first Hubbard Park CVR picnic following next Tuesday’s Fun Run – see below for more info, but hopefully see many members there, even if you don’t join the run, stop by the park to say hello!
Meanwhile, below find more updates on upcoming races, volunteer needs (Capital Stampede is still looking), CVR/ORO Race Series standings updates (spoiler alert…we haven’t published yet but this is a friendly reminder to renew your membership by end of May to stay competitive in the series!).
And this week, I’m trying something new – I plan to send out a “special edition” newsletter later this week with a profile of a long-running club member that I think everyone will enjoy. I’m hoping this can be a blueprint for periodic special profiles or stories – if you have a story to tell, send me a note! I can always be reached by replying directly to this email or you can write me at hetomlins@gmail.com. Happy running (and reading!).
Warmly,
Heather Tomlins

Upcoming Races and Club Volunteer Needs
- Saturday, June 8, 9am: CVR’s Capital City Stampede 10K and 5K Power Walk, Montpelier. This is a CVR/ORO race series race – the fastest 10K course in Vermont! This race is also shared with the Vermont Senior Games Association. New this year is a 5K Power Walk option that will be open to ages 10 and up. Volunteers are needed! Jim is looking for course safety monitors, finish line crew, and aid station volunteers! Please reach out to Jim directly at jimflintvt@gmail.com or sign up under the Members section of the CVR website.
- Sunday, October 6: It’s a long way off, but you can never plan too far ahead, right? Just a reminder that the Leaf Peepers 5K and Half Marathon registration is now open! Get registered here, and start your training for one of Vermont’s best and most scenic races of the year!
CVR cannot put on races without volunteer support, and your help is needed. Please volunteer now to help the race directors fill necessary jobs and plan for full race day support. Volunteer now online using the Volunteer link on the CVR website homepage at https://cvrunners.org OR by email to the race directors above.
Fun Runs –> Other Runs –>Trail Season!
Trail Running – first run will be this Saturday! May 25 at Cow Hill in Peacham Town Forest
The first trail run will be hosted by Natalie Chapell this Saturday for a run on Cow Hill in Peacham Town Forest. Meet in Danville at 213 Cow Hill Road (park in the field) at 7am sharp! Mark has also started a Google Group as a way to get information out – if you’d like to receive the Trail Running details every week (separate from this update), please email Mark.
If you’d like to be a host, please take a look at the sign up sheet here, hosts still needed for later June and into July.
Tuesday Fun Runs
Tuesday Fun Runs set off every Tuesday at 5:30pm from the DoL parking lot. Starting this month we will be trying something new. Next Tuesday we will have our first Hubbard Park picnic gathering – see below for details! Special thanks to Merill Creagh for her legwork to make park meetups happen. And thanks to Darrel Lassel for continuing to be our local social organizer too. For May, the remaining meetup schedule is as follows:
- Tuesday, May 28: Hubbard Park (see some Do’s and Don’ts on the Park Gathering here)
- As a note, for these post-Fun Run gatherings, Fun Run will still start/end at the DoL parking lot, and participants who wish to join the gatherings will be responsible for getting themselves to the meeting spot!
Reminder on Membership Status and Race Series Standings
Are you curious about where you stand in the CVR/ORO Race Series so far in 2024? Well, the tallies have been updated behind the scenes and will be published at the beginning of June on the CVR website. Why not post them now? Because new members joining or current members who renew by May 31 will get credit for all their races retroactively. Someone could join at the last minute and change the standings retroactively, which has happened before, and we don’t want to cause that confusion.
So this is your friendly reminder that anybody who has not renewed by the end of May will not receive points for any races that they have run to this date. If you want to vie for the bragging rights, hit the membership renewalbutton on the website ASAP!
