Race Report – 45th Annual Northfield 5K and Kids Mile

CVR’s partnerships showed their strength on August 31 at the Northfield 5k & Kids Mile. Volunteers from CVR and the Vermont Senior Games Association worked side-by-side with Norwich University cadets, the Central Vermont Amateur Radio Club, and Northfield Ambulance Service to ensure a safe event for 181 participants. Northfield Savings Bank and Darn Tough Socks generously provided kids medals and age group awards.  NSB volunteers staffed the 5k water station. The New England 65-Plus Runners Club helped to sponsor the race refreshments.

Division winners in the 5k run were Zach Levy (men, 17:22), Jenny Moltz (women, 19:47), and Sarah Knutson (nonbinary, 26:10). CVR member Luke Miller (19:01) placed fifth in the men’s division. Amanda Watters (20:13) placed third among the women. In addition to Sarah (N60-64) and Amanda (F40-44), CVR age group winners included Addie Hedges (F20-24), Stephen Brown (M40-44), Meg Valentine (F40-44), Anne Treadwell (F55-59), Dot Martin (F60-64), Tim Noonan (M65-69), Elizabeth McCarthy (F70-74), Gordon McFarland (M75-79), and Bob Murphy (M80-84).

Anne, Dot, Tim, Elizabeth, Gordon, and Bob were among 15 CVR members (ages 50 and up) to win a Vermont Senior Association gold, silver, or bronze medal in the state championship 5k run and 5k power walk. For the second year in a row, Jackson Boright (6:52), from Maine, and Irie Miller (7:01), from Montpelier, were the fastest finishers among 31 boys and girls in the one-mile kids race. The Northfield races raised $3,373 to support youth and senior running programs, while more than $700 in designated donations were passed on to The Veterans Place, in Northfield.

The timing and finish line teams, led by John Hackney and Donna Smyers, accurately recorded three races with overlapping finishers. Jackie Jancaitis headed up the course safety team. George Moltz led the registration team. Emma Cerutti sang the National Anthem. Thank you to all involved for pitching in and meeting the added challenge of a rainy day in Northfield!

CVR Coaching Program – Groton Trail Race Participants!

Multiple participants from April Farnham’s ongoing summer/fall coaching program took part in the Groton Trail races as part of their participation in the group – for many their training was leading up to this race (and/or Leaf Peepers coming up in less than a month!). See below for some friendly faces from training to racing!

Fun Runs –> Trail Season!

CVR Special Edition – Did You Miss It?

We hope you have been enjoying them! Do you also want to tell your story or share a profile you’d like to have featured? Please reach out and send details to Heather. You could be our next special edition! Stories could cover anything running or club related, such as:

  • Club history – how races started or stories from past decades of members’ accomplishments
  • Your achievements – did you tackle your first marathon? Your 15th? Your first 10k? Race stories are inspiring, whether you triumphed, set a personal record, or did not finish but learned a lesson. Tell your fellow members about it!
  • Personal history – how did you get into the sport of running?
  • Other ideas!

All stories welcome – pitch me or just send something along with a picture or two to go with! Deadline is rolling!

Volunteer Coordinator and Event MC Needed for Leaf Peepers!
Leaf Peepers is the biggest race CVR puts on and this year we are looking for a volunteer coordinator and an event MC to ensure the event goes on without a hitch. The volunteer coordinator would ideally be able to start helping recruit volunteers this summer, assign roles, and manage volunteers on race day, working closely with Race Director Will Robens to identify volunteer needs. The event MC would call results and be available on the event day to help make the pre-race, start, and finish a fun event for all. Some preparation time required, but overall time commitment is the event itself. If interested in either role or if you’d like more information, please reach out to Will directly at rd@catamountultra.com

Rebecca Wallick’s book – Wild Running: Lessons from Dogs, Wolves, and the Natural World: a Memoir
It’s not every day that we can say that CVR’s ranks include a newly published author, but we can now with the release of Rebecca Wallick’s book, Wild Running: Lessons from Dogs, Wolves, and the Natural World – a Memoir. I have been thoroughly enjoying this treat of a book as I grab moments to read here and there, and I think it will appeal to other members who want to dive into Rebecca’s world of dogs, running, and helping de-mystify one of the most misunderstand animals in the natural world. Available via Amazon here. Let me know what you think!
