CVR Birthdays – September 9 – 22

Happy Birthday to: David Erickson, Dot Martin, Amani Suter, Greg Wight, Scott Richardson, Taryn Colonnese, Bess Powers, Sarah Knutson, Jordan Lumsden, and Lydia Weeks!
Hello from Montpelier,

I associate Fall with running more than any other season – I suppose this goes back to my earliest running days on the cross country team, so it’s hard to avoid the association! However, the lineup of events and activities happening this month and into October confirms that Fall = running season, so read on for all kinds of running fun. Last call for the the upcoming “Oktoberfest” Trail Season-ending run at Trapp’s THIS SATURDAY, September 28, and then don’t forget we have a club meeting THIS SUNDAY the 29th, hosted in Montpelier (agenda linked below). Lots more on races (volunteers needed for Leaf Peepers! ORO’s 1-mile fun run this Saturday! Deadline for Good Measure’s 10/5 run/walk 5K is Sept 25!). Get out there!

Happy running,
Heather Tomlins

Sodom Pond – A Perfect Evening in Adamant!

35 runners stepped out in Adamant last Wednesday evening for a 4-mile race around Sodom Pond, in almost perfect conditions – a little muggy, but overall a gorgeous near-Autumn evening for a fast race. Full results can be found here, and a few photos below. Congrats to all racers!

Upcoming Races and Club Volunteer Needs

Volunteer now online using the Volunteer link on the CVR website homepage at https://cvrunners.org OR by email to the race directors above.

Catch up with what this incredible group is up to as they get ready for Leaf Peepers in a few short weeks – Hubbard Park hill repeats were on the menu last week!

Fun Runs –> Trail Season!

Trail Season Oktoberfest Run – THIS SATURDAY! September 28th at Trapp’s! Last Call!
It’s the CVR Trail Running Oktoberfest to close out the summer trail running series in style. We will meet at the Outdoor Center at Trapp Family Lodge at 9:00 sharp to buy half-price ticketstell them you’re part of the CVR group to get the discount. There will be a variety of trail options available for running on your own or coming along for a longer (2-plus hours) version and a shorter (1 hour or so) version that will be led by veteran Trapp’s runners. These will be easy, fun, conversational runs on well-maintained trails. We will run from and back to the bierhall, where we’ll have reservations for lunch. Note: The bierhall is 1.2 miles away from the Outdoor Center, just off Luce Hill Road (there’s a prominent sign you’ll likely see on your left on your way to the Outdoor Center). If you’re coming to lunch, please sign up so we can reserve enough seats. Central Vermont Runners is also happy to host runners who plan to run the Trapp Lodge Mountain Marathon and are looking to preview the course. If that’s you, just tell the Outdoor Center that you’re there for the CVR trail run to get the discount.

Tuesday Fun Runs
Tuesday Fun Runs set off every Tuesday at 5:30pm from the DoL parking lot. Daylight is falling off fast, so our Hubbard Park meet-ups are hibernating until further notice. However, one bear that is not going to sleep anytime soon is the Bear Naked Growler –  meetup there tomorrow, September 24 after Fun Run!

Save the Date – next Club Meeting THIS SUNDAY September 29 @5pm!
The meeting will be hosted in Montpelier at the home of Denise Ricker – draft agenda is here, please feel free to add a comment or email me if you want to see a topic included. The potluck will start at 4:30pm with the meeting to start promptly at 5pm. A Google Meet link is provided and we’ll have the online option set up to start the meeting. We look forward to seeing many folks (in person or online) on the 29th!

CVR/ORO Race Series Standings
Updated race standings are here, and are now inclusive of Sodom Pond!

A reminder to all members – don’t forget that members have to volunteer for a race to be eligible for prizes! Leaf Peepers and the Fallen Leaves series are all available to meet that requirement. Also note that six members with the highest point totals who did not win their age group will also receive prizes at the annual club dinner in January. There are a few age groups that are mostly wrapped up, but the race for the runner up spots is still wide open right now. Sign up to volunteer and/or race, there is still time!

CVR Special Edition – Did You Miss It?
So far we’ve had quite a few great stories come our way that we’ve put out in these special editions. We hope you have been enjoying them! Do you also want to tell your story or share a profile you’d like to have featured? Please reach out and send details to Heather. You could be our next special edition! Stories could cover anything running or club related, such as:

  • Club history – how races started or stories from past decades of members’ accomplishments
  • Your achievements – did you tackle your first marathon? Your 15th? Your first 10k? Race stories are inspiring, whether you triumphed, set a personal record, or did not finish but learned a lesson. Tell your fellow members about it!
  • Personal history – how did you get into the sport of running?
  • Other ideas!

All stories welcome – pitch me or just send something along with a picture or two to go with! Deadline is rolling!

Volunteer Coordinator and Event MC Needed for Leaf Peepers!
Leaf Peepers is the biggest race CVR puts on and this year we are looking for a volunteer coordinator and an event MC to ensure the event goes on without a hitch. The volunteer coordinator would ideally be able to start helping recruit volunteers this summer, assign roles, and manage volunteers on race day, working closely with Race Director Will Robens to identify volunteer needs. The event MC would call results and be available on the event day to help make the pre-race, start, and finish a fun event for all. Some preparation time required, but overall time commitment is the event itself. If interested in either role or if you’d like more information, please reach out to Will directly at rd@catamountultra.com

Rebecca Wallick’s book – Wild Running: Lessons from Dogs, Wolves, and the Natural World: a Memoir
It’s not every day that we can say that CVR’s ranks include a newly published author, but we can now with the release of Rebecca Wallick’s book, Wild Running: Lessons from Dogs, Wolves, and the Natural World – a Memoir. I have been thoroughly enjoying this treat of a book as I grab moments to read here and there, and I think it will appeal to other members who want to dive into Rebecca’s world of dogs, running, and helping de-mystify one of the most misunderstand animals in the natural world. Available via Amazon here. Let me know what you think!
