Happy Birthday to: Phyllis Arsenault-Berry, Newton Baker, Brian Bushey, Gerow Carlson, Maryellen Copping, John Gardner-Morse, Asa Lloyd, Elizabeth McCarthy, Manny Sainz, Leslie Welts, Jennifer Dickinson, Chris Cote, Kevin Nadzam, Holly Fowler (New Age Group!), Jim Rohr, Ashley Piccirillo (New Age Group!), Justin Brown, Alexandria Whitcomb, Steph Lahr, and Erik Lahr!
Hello from Montpelier,
Happy November, and hope everyone remembered to their clocks back one hour yesterday (I suppose this is becoming less of an issue as digital devices tend to do this automatically….but I still savor the fact that my oven and microwave require manual adjustment!). I am compiling this newsletter a bit early and setting to send Monday night as I am about to take off this weekend to go to New York to watch the NYC Marathon for the first time! I’ll be there cheering on former Vermonter and CVR member Natalie Gentry as she takes on the race – if any other CVR members raced New York this weekend, please let me know, I’d love to feature some photos in the next newsletter!
Below find updates on our final races of the season, the last Fallen Leaves series races, a new feature – a CVR Book Club!, and a reminder that our final 2024 Club Meeting will take place this coming Sunday, November 10 in Adamant! Please join us as we finalize the 2025 race schedule among other critical topics! And also note that we are looking for a new Winter Group Runs coordinator to help organize the winter runs starting the first Saturday in December – is this you? Reach out to me if interested!
Happy running,
Heather Tomlins
Upcoming Races and Club Volunteer Needs
Remaining 2024 Race Schedule:
- November 9 and 16: Fallen Leaves series continues! Only day-of registration for these fun, fast 5K races starting at the Montpelier High School track. Two left in the series, see you at the track this coming Saturday! Volunteers for these are always needed, so if you can help out a bit since there is only race day registration and need for some course marshals and timers, please reach out to Tim and Donna!
- December 31: Mark your calendar for our annual New Year’s Eve 5K in downtown Montpelier! Details to come.
Race Series Standings Updates – Volunteer Opportunities are running out for 2024!
A reminder to all members – don’t forget that members have to volunteer for a race to be eligible for prizes! The Fallen Leaves series is your last chance to meet that requirement for 2024! Also note that six members with the highest point totals who did not win their age group will also receive prizes at the annual club dinner in January. There are a few age groups that are mostly wrapped up, but the race for the runner up spots is still wide open right now. Sign up to volunteer and/or race, there is still time!
*********
The season may be winding down, but CVR cannot put on races without volunteer support, and your help is always needed. Please volunteer now to help the race directors fill necessary jobs and plan for full race day support. Volunteer now online using the Volunteer link on the CVR website homepage at https://cvrunners.org OR by email to the race directors above.
Save the Date – Final Club Meeting of 2024 – November 10
This coming Sunday! We will have a jam-packed meeting on November 10th at the Adamant Community Center, discussing finalizing the 2025 race schedule, updates on our logo refresh, and any other topics – agenda is here, please reach out if you have additions or ideas! A Google Meet link option is embedded in the agenda if you can participate remotely instead of in-person.
New Feature – A CVR Running Book Club!
Anne hosts the Bill Mares Memorial Running Book Library, loaning books to club members and other interested readers. Email her (ac98@cornell.edu) for the list. Readers are welcome to submit brief running book reviews for occasional inclusion in this newsletter.
Mini Book Review
The Frontrunner by Brad Fawley (Green Writers Press, 2024)
This new Vermont-published novel (author Brad Fawley splits his time between Vermont and California) delivers an enthralling story and evokes visceral muscle memory with vividly described running scenes. Anyone who’s competed in cross-country or track—and indeed anyone who’s ever wondered how fast they can run—will be engrossed in and inspired by this book. Perfect for reading by the fire this winter while dreaming of clear roads to run on.

Fun Runs –> Winter Group Runs!
This last Tuesday’s Fun Run was a very popular event, and good to see all those bright clothes and reflective gear on our runners! The clocks have changed as of Sunday, meaning our official Tuesday Fun Runs will go into hibernation until springtime, but we’ll update here if runs will still be happening in the dark, from TBD start locations. Thanks all for another
Winter Group Runs – We need a Coordinator!
Winter Group Runs typically kick off the first Saturday in December – but this year we need a new coordinator (your humble president can only write so many emails per week). However – the Google Listserv approach that the Trail Running crew got started this year seemed to work well and untethered these announcements from having to come from an official club spokesperson. If you’re interested in helping set up a sign-up sheet and facilitate finding hosts for Saturday winter group runs this year, please reach out to me! It’s a fun role and doesn’t take up too much time.
Reminder about Committee Openings
As a note, there is a general call for committee members for a few issues, please reach out to me (by replying directly to this email) if you’re interested in joining any of the below!
Club Logo Refresh Committee – this group has been at work for a few months but new members are always welcome to help us narrow down some ideas for the logo refresh and help plan for presenting to the club at the end of year meeting in November. Is this you? Join Merill, Luke, Addie, Seth, and Heather! (now with Sue and April!)
2025 Race Planning Committee – join Heather, Tim, and Donna (plus others still TBD!) to help plan the slate of races in next year’s series and overall race calendar. This has to be completed before the November meeting, so if you’re interested, speak up soon. (we’ve already started the process but it’s not too late to join!)
End of Year Celebration Dinner – this is tentatively scheduled for mid-January, but a small committee is standing up to identify a venue and help plan the event.
Club Anniversary Event Planning Committee – 2025 marks the 45th birthday of CVR – Merill and Donna are heading this up – won’t you join them? The idea here is to come up with some ideas for how to celebrate the club’s anniversary, whether with one event next year or possibly several. If you want to shape what this looks like, join this committee!
CVR Special Edition – Did You Miss It?
So far we’ve had quite a few great stories come our way that we’ve put out in these special editions. We hope you have been enjoying them! Do you also want to tell your story or share a profile you’d like to have featured? Please reach out and send details to Heather. You could be our next special edition! Stories could cover anything running or club related, such as:
- Club history – how races started or stories from past decades of members’ accomplishments
- Your achievements – did you tackle your first marathon? Your 15th? Your first 10k? Race stories are inspiring, whether you triumphed, set a personal record, or did not finish but learned a lesson. Tell your fellow members about it!
- Personal history – how did you get into the sport of running?
- Other ideas!
All stories welcome – pitch me or just send something along with a picture or two to go with! Deadline is rolling!

I have been thoroughly enjoying this treat of a book as I grab moments to read here and there, and I think it will appeal to other members who want to dive into Rebecca’s world of dogs, running, and helping de-mystify one of the most misunderstand animals in the natural world.
