September 7 & 14.

Giving Back

As fall is steaming toward us at full speed, it’s a great time to remember that it’s not too late for all kinds of things this year – still warm enough for some swimming or paddling, if you haven’t gotten around to it or feel like you didn’t do enough this summer. Still possible to grab that creemee! Find a way to cook up all that zucchini and bumper crop of late season tomatoes. And, if you’re in the running for a CVR/ORO race series award but somehow still haven’t volunteered yet this year (no, not you!), there are still chances to take care of that task before the year’s races are over! In fact, there are more chances left to volunteer than there are to grab a title in the series (five versus two). All this to say, the club needs you and it’s never too late to help us out.

And for those of you who volunteer many times over, we never say no to a volunteer either so reach out to support a race today if you can. Sodom Pond and Leaf Peepers are coming up and could use you, so the details are below on how to sign up. Thank you!

Happy running,
Heather

Northfield Labor Day Footraces Recap

CVR’s partnerships showed their strength on August 30 at the Northfield 5k & Kids Mile. Volunteers from CVR and the Vermont Senior Games Association worked side-by-side with Norwich University students, the Central Vermont Amateur Radio Club, and Northfield Ambulance Service to ensure a safe event for 163 participants. Northfield Savings Bank and Darn Tough Socks generously provided kids medals and age group awards.  NSB volunteers staffed the 5k water station. The New England 65-Plus Runners Club helped to sponsor the race refreshments.

Division winners in the 5k run were Steven Supan (men, 18:38), Jess Marini (women, 20:06), and Sarah Knutson (nonbinary, 24:58). CVR member Stephen Brown (19:34) placed fourth in the men’s division. CVR’s Megan Valentine (21:27) and Anna Milkowski (21:31) placed third and fourth among the women. In addition to Stephen (M40-44), Meg (F45-49), Anna (F50-54), and Sarah (N60-64), CVR age group winners included Isaac Nadzam (M10-14), Sean Sheehan (M50-54), Anne Treadwell (F55-59), Dot Martin (F60-64), Ann Bushey (F65-69), Elizabeth McCarthy (F70-74), Keith Boniface (M70-74), Dick Ferno (M80-84), and Bob Murphy (M85-89).

Anna Milkowski won the F50-54 age group in the 5k run. Her son, Martin Riechel, topped the boys 6-8 age group in the kids mile. Jim Rohr (in the background) placed first in the M60-64 age group in the 5k power walk.

Anna, Sean, Sarah, Anne, Dot, Ann, Elizabeth, Keith, Dick, and Bob were among 21 CVR 5k run finishers (ages 50 and up) recognized in the top three of their five-year age groups by the Vermont Senior Games Association. In the 5k power walk, Denise Ricker, Phyllis Arsenault-Berry, and Jim Rohr, were recognized by VSGA for placing in the top two of their five-year age groups. Marian Mumford was the top power walker, finishing the 5k course in 38:48.

Wesley Moulton (6:38), from West Berlin, and Jane Griffith (7:15), from Waterbury, were the top male and female finishers among 32 entries in the one-mile kids race. The Northfield races raised $2,766 to support youth running program grants and senior athletic programs. More than $400 in designated donations were passed on to The Veterans Place, in Northfield.

The timing and finish line teams, led by John Hackney and Donna Smyers, accurately recorded three races with overlapping finishers. Jackie Jancaitis headed up the course safety team. George Moltz led the registration team. Northfield High School students Anastasia Rhodes and Avah Lunn sang the National Anthem.

A special thank you to all the volunteers and participants who graciously supported this fast and fun community effort! –Jim Flint

New records at Northfield 2025

Despite great running conditions and a lot of outstanding performances at this year’s edition of the Northfield Observances Race, there were no new age group records set. However, four new single age records were recorded, all by members of Central Vermont Runners. Congratulations to all of them!

M 65-69
Tim Noonan: 24:07 for best single age record for 69 year old.
F 65-69
Ann Bushey: 27:04 for best single age record for 67 year old.
F 70-74
Elizabeth McCarthy: 28:26 for best single age record for 72 year old.
Merill Creagh: 29:23 for best single age record for 73 year old.

CVR at Race to the Top!

This event may already feel like ancient history to participants but it was only 2 weeks ago! Just missed my deadline for inclusion in the last newsletter – find below some pictures of CVR at the annual Race to the Top of Vermont on Mount Mansfield on August 24 (results here), and see if you can spot some familiar faces at the tail end of WCAX’s coverage in the video linked here! Congrats to all!

Save the Date! Next Club Meeting – September 22

We will be meeting in Adamant at the Community Club the evening of September 22 – come up and hang out with your fellow members at the potluck prior to the meeting, and stay for the fun (meeting will start around 6pm and last one hour). There will be a remote option for those who can’t make it in person. Send any agenda items my way, the draft agenda can be found here.

Data Call! Help Bob Murphy Out!

From Bob Murphy: I am in the process of compiling (again) a list of single age and age group records for the 10-miler. That was done in the past but with a lot of good records omitted simply because I could not determine the age at which a particular person ran that time. Age groups sometimes included everyone from 14-29, for instance.  I am making an effort to get better information this time.  One problem that has arisen is that there are three years for which I have little or no records.  For 1977 and 1979, I have brief newspaper results (very skimpy, ages often not given, and times not always given), and for 1994 I have nothing.  I would like to have anyone with information on any of those years to sent their information to me at rmm.vt@charter.net

2025 CVR/ORO Race Series Standings

We are rounding into the home stretch in the CVR/ORO Race Series! The updated standings through Northfield are here. Several age groups have been clinched, but there’s some hot competition in the F70-79 and M50-59 categories, and a few others could get interesting over the final races. There are also a lot of contenders for the six runner-up awards. A few runners have clinched the championship pending volunteer service. There are only 2 races left to vie for a title,so sign up for Sodom Pond or Leaf Peepers TODAY!

And don’t forget one requirement is to volunteer at least once – just 5 more opportunities to do so this fall (including at Sodom Pond (Tim really needs people!), Leaf Peepers (Will also really needs people!), and all three Fallen Leaves 5Ks) so sign up today to help!

Coordinator Joe Merrill works to update these as frequently as he can, so we update on the website whenever possible. Be patient as results can sometimes take a few weeks after races to reconcile.

A sincere thank you to our sponsor Onion River Outdoors and specifically Allee Pineault for her excellent work putting this together. We will have printed copies of the poster available if you want to share this with any local businesses or publicize at your upcoming races, just let me know!
