News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Zachary Acosta, (my first lady) Dot Helling, Bob Howe, Keely Koenig, Scott Hess, & Caitlin Belcher!

Greetings from a still wintery Adamant,

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a couple of un-seasonably warm days with sunshine. As predicted, last Saturday dropped a significant amount of snow. Enough to warrant moving the WGR to Sunday (see below). Fortunately, this coming weekend is forecast to be partly sunny and 35F in the Montpelier area. If you’re interested in slightly warmer weather, there’s a 5K race in Rutland on Saturday (see below). I personally like 5Ks in the spring as I build up my running base for the summer.

As always, watch your footing, wear bright colored clothes, watch for cars, and have fun.

Winter Group Runs
This weekend the plan is to meet in Plainfield, which hasn’t gotten any winter run love yet this season, and back to Saturday at the usual meeting time (9am). More info and sign-up sheet are here. Look for the details Thursday, and as always, if you want to join that list, email Donna Smyers or Heather Tomlins.

The new snow didn’t stop our intrepid club runners from finding their way along the snowy lanes of Berlin Pond.  There’s another run this Saturday (along with more snow).

Club Meeting
I have reserved the Adamant Community Club building here in Adamant for our March meeting. The meeting will be Sunday, March 26th from 3-5PM. As it’s being held at the Adamant Community Club, I’d like to offer snacks for members to munch on as we work through the meeting. Please feel free to bring something to share.  Also, please send me your agenda items. One item on the agenda is a discussion around racer and volunteer safety. I’ve also been contacted by the Upper Valley Running Club regarding our race series and the possibility of including them next year. This is your club so bring up your concerns and thoughts how we can be a better club. Thanks!

Membership Renewal – Reminder
We are in the renewal time of year. If your membership year is 2022, your membership will expire on 3/31/2023.
There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Do consider renewing with a multi-year membership. This means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.
Not sure whether your membership is due for renewal in 2023?
•              check your membership card *
•              check when your membership expires by logging in to the CVR website at https://cvrunners.org/wp-login.php/ (instructions at: https://cvrunners.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/membership-expiration-instructions.pdf
•              contact me at graham.a.sherriff@outlook.com and I’ll confirm your renewal date
* Need a new card for yourself or other household members? Let me know!

Strava
Were you aware the Winter Group Runs are recorded on Strava? Check with Donna or Heather if you want to join.

Web Site
We have a story sent in by a member that is now posted on the website. It’s by Joe Merrill about his and Katie’s trip to Bermuda to run the Bermuda Triangle Challenge. Here’s a link to the story on the Member Posts page: https://cvrunners.org/member-posts/    Please send any running related stories and articles that you think other members would be interested to read to John at info@cvrunners.org

Race Series
It’s a new year and Joe and John are the ones handling the race series tracking.  Head here cvroro race series – Central Vermont Runners (cvrunners.org) to check out your competition.

Trail Running
Mark informed me that trail running has gone into hibernation for the winter. For those who like to be on trails year-round, I encourage you to look into a set of micro-spikes from Onion River Outdoors. The folks there can also suggest a wide range of trails to explore and how best to do it.

Other runs
Day Light Saving time change is set to happen this coming weekend! Once the daylight savings change occurs, I wouldn’t be surprised if people started showing up at 5:30 for unofficial runs as sunset will be around 7:00PM. If you do, please continue to wear bright clothes.  The days are getting longer by over 3 minutes now. Civil twilight is now a little over 6:15PM. People should still wear lights and reflective gear.

Volunteers

  • All races for the rest of 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online, and volunteers are needed for the upcoming races. Paul Mailman and the Mutt Strut are coming up in April, and we need many volunteers for these races. Follow the instructions on the CVR website HELP page at https://cvrunners.org/help/ to volunteer online, OR directly contact John Hackney at info@cvrunners.org for Paul Mailman or Maryellen Copping at melcopping@gmail.com for Mutt Strut. Email John at info@cvrunners.org with any questions about volunteering.

Race Results/reviews:

According to the UVM website (Crompton Sets 3000 School Record to Headline Cats at ECAC/IC4A Championships – University of Vermont Athletics (uvmathletics.com)), Andrew Crompton raced to a school record for the second time in as many weeks at BU Track & Tennis Center, this time registering Vermont’s top 3000-meter mark on Sunday at the ECAC/IC4A Championships.

The UVM men placed in a tie for 22nd in the team competition with a score of 12 points. The Vermont women recorded a score of 13 points for 23rd in their respective competition.
