News and Notes

CVR birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Kimberly Caldwell, & James Lehneman

Greetings from Adamant, home to the Friday night community cookouts,

Another busy week of races.
The Bear Swamp was run July 9th with 42 finishers. The overall male winner was Evan Thornton-Sherman in a time of 31:04.  Overall Female Winner Lori Howe crossed the finish line in a time of 37:16. I didn’t receive any information on conditions or photos. The results are posted on the CVR website bear-swamp-results-2022.pdf (cvrunners.org) .

The Mad Marathon was run on July 10th. There were a number of CVR members running. Sandy Colvin ran on a team and Dot Helling (the First Lady of CVR) and Ann Bushey split the marathon at a 9:45 pace. Grace Acosta ran the half marathon.

The conditions were sunny, warm, and breezy and on a super hilly, jaw dropping gorgeous course.

Evan Thornton-Sherman
Evan is a young man we should all be aware of. Evan’s name often shows up in the race results (such as Montpelier Mile and Bear Swamp). As a result of his running, Evan was awarded the Gatorade Vermont runner of the Year. Here is a link to the formal recognition: 2022_BTF_EThornton-Sherman.pdf (gatorade.com)  Evan has passed on more than $2000 from Gatorade and race winnings to CVR.  That money allows the club to support other regional runners in the form of grants as well as helping to keep the cost of our races affordable.

Warren Kitzmiller
Bob Murphy wrote me to recognize Warren Kitzmiller and his recent passing. Bob states “it
should not be forgotten that Warren was (I believe) the originator of
the Montpelier Fun Runs (Darragh, correct me if that is wrong).
This was in the early to mid 1970s as the ‘running boom’ inspired by the
likes of Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter was taking place. Warren was
there each week throughout the summer, and sponsored an annual end of
summer picnic for all fun runners. CVR eventually took over the fun runs
that he had started (but, unfortunately, not the summer picnics). We owe
him a lot.”

The CVR/ORO races series standings continue to be updated with the results of the Bear Swamp soon to be included.  Thanks for getting the results updated and posted Joe & John.

Fun Runs/walks are happening!
Runners and Walkers welcome!

There has been a really friendly group of runners & walkers showing up Tuesday evenings to stretch their legs on our out & back course. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the young runners out. As a former runner and now non-runner it’s also been nice to see other walkers.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 Fun Runs/walks are happening.  Distances are 2, 4, and 6 miles on a flat, out and back route along the river. The runs are self-timed if you’re interested in that.   The weather report looks good again this week so expect there will be runners there.

Trail Running

Here’s the link for CVR trail runs:
 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QVYTimMdXi0NafvtSjvwcacQ1yP4uMNipIJw7FUeymU/edit#gid=556043005

It’s a Google Doc. You can look ahead and see if there’s a run that interests you.

We’ll have two more trail runs in July (at Millstone in Barre and North Branch/Hubbard in Montpelier).
If you haven’t yet joined a summer trail run, put one or more on your calendar – they are always a lot of fun.

We hope to continue the summer trail runs in August, but need hosts for all four weeks.
Please consider hosting on your favorite local trails!

For those who like longer trail runs, Darrel Lasell did one of New Hampshire’s premier trails runs, The Presidential Traverse. This is a 21 mile, strenuous, point to point trek that takes you up and over Mt Washington as well as several other White Mt Peaks. Darrel reports it took him 15 hours start to finish.

Millstone Trails has brought back their Virtual trail series. There are 10 weeks of trail challenges and the series benefits Millstone Trails. For more info go to http://www.millstonetrails.org/events/2022-trail-series/.

Volunteer Signup
To make this year’s events successful, we need volunteers! Race Directors are always in need of volunteers so if you are available on the day of an event and will not be running, please consider volunteering. This year, we are accepting your sign up on our website. Click here to check out the signup site. Click on “Volunteer for a CVR Race”. If any issues, please reach out to our webmaster John Hackney

Using the volunteer’s app, race directors are responsible for making any final changes to their list of volunteers within 2 or 3 days after their race. Then, using the ‘Set volunteer status’ item on their menu, they should set the volunteer status of their race to Final to prevent any more changes from being made.

Hollie Friot has started a run group for new runners or those returning to running after a break.  The goal is to help people with their running with a goal of running theBarre Heritage Trail Run on July 30. You can reach out to Hollie via the CVR Facebook page.

Race Results/reviews:
There are races all over the world (yes world) that CVR club members participate in. If you complete a race, please send me a short blurb about it. People like to hear about races/runs. Thanks.

Up Coming Events.

Come run around Cate Farm! The Tomato Trot 5K is a scenic trail run through farm fields and on woods roads, around the borders of Cate Farm. The first kilometer snakes along the Winooski River and is relatively flat; the rest of the run is over small rolling hills. Each runner will receive a pound of Cate Farm tomatoes upon finishing the 5K, and anyone 65 or older who beats Farmer Richard’s time gets 2 pounds of tomatoes! (FYI, Richard is not that fast:)

Northfield 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile Kids Run
Registration is now open for the Northfield races on Saturday, September 3. CVR has stepped up to direct this year’s races. Northfield Savings Bank, which previously directed the race, will sponsor the age group awards for adults and kids. For runners and power walkers, age 50 and up, the race will also serve as the Vermont Senior Games 5k state championship. VSGA gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners and walkers, in five-year age groups. The 5k run and 5k power walk are qualifiers for the 2023 National Senior Games, to be held in Pittsburgh next July. More info and early registration discounts are available at https://cvrunners.org/cvr-races/northfield-5k/.

Down East Sunrise Trail Relay Race
My name is Jazmyn and I’m part of GMAA (shoutout to my running friends I see every Tuesday at ECHO at 5:30)! I’m reaching out to this group to see if anyone is interested in running on my relay team for the Down East Sunrise Trail Relay Race as part of an 8-person relay (currently have 2-3 spots to fill). The 102.7-mile race starts in Ellsworth ME and finishes in Eastport. Start time between 9:30pm/12am July 22/23 with goal to finish around noon July 23. Legs range from 3.6 miles to 10.6 miles with each running roughly 13 miles for the race (full length is 102.7 miles). Right now we’ve got a pretty solid group of runners on the team. If you’re interested, please check out the race website at
https://www.crowathletics.com/destrelay-race-overview and/or email me! I’d like to get the group finalized within the next week or so. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Other News
Lenny’s
A reminder that Lenny’s in Barre has given CVR member’s a 10% for shoes in the past. Graham Sherriff has reached out to them to see if this applies to their Williston store. I’ll let you know what Graham finds out. Thanks Graham for your work on this.

CVR Equipment Use
Anyone wanting to use equipment send Sal a request that includes 1) Date equipment to be removed from the shed, 2) Itemized list of equipment being removed; including quantities, 3) Date equipment will be returned to the shed.

CVR Membership
We (Graham) are in the process of going through our membership to keep it up-to-date as well as shared with our MailChimp account so everyone is getting my amazing newsletters (?).

Trivia:
I had three guesses to the trivia question this past week.
Pete Kostelnick (born September 12, 1987) is an American ultramarathon runner most well known for his world record for fastest coast-to-coast crossing of the United States by foot, in 42 days, six hours and 30 minutes.
The winner of a loaf of my homemade bread is Mark Howard.

This week’s trivia question: What shoe did Peres Jepchirchir wear when she won the Boston Marathon this year?

Email your answers to me at andresen41@gmail.com.  I will pick one correct answer at random to receive a prize.
