CVR Birthdays this week

Happy Birthday to: Rima Carlson, John Mattern, Marian Overfield, Lillian Meyer!

Greetings from Adamant, a state of mind.

For those of you who don’t know, Adamant is not a town.  Adamant is an area in Calais Vermont. While it has a zip code (05640), it doesn’t have any actual borders that separate it from any other part of Calais. The people who state that they live in Adamant do so because they choose to be from Adamant. They are a collection of people such as farmers, retired lawyers, company managers, musicians, landscapers, state employees, and artists. They are a cross section of Vermont. They all have their part in making Adamant what it is whether through volunteering to help the COOP, being part of the Black Fly festival, enjoying summer concerts at the music school, or coming Friday evenings during the summer to enjoy the BBQ.

I see CVR in much the same way. We are a club because we choose to be. Like Adamant, the club membership is made up of a broad spectrum of people from across Vermont who have come together to run. The members support it through volunteering for race support, managing the website like John H, Directing races like Don and the Barre Town Spring Run or Jim and Shannon working with VT Senior Games for the Capital City Stampede, or the members who participate in a race or trail run. Central Vermont Runners exists because we want it to and I’m grateful for that.

Club Meeting
We held a club meeting this past Sunday.  The meeting was held in Northfield. We had a small turnout but still a productive meeting. As small meetings seem to be an ongoing occurrence, the group had a discussion on changing the club rule regarding what constitutes a quorum. The current quorum rule is 5% of the membership. Due the difficulty in meeting that number, it has been proposed to change the wording to 5% of the membership or 10 people. We will vote on this change at our next club meeting in August. The group heard from Don regarding the Barre Town Spring run as well as from Donna and the Adamant Half Marathon. John H submitted a report for the Paul Mailman. All were successful and were able to contribute several hundred dollars to back to their communities. John V gave us a quick update on club finances (and thanked race directors for their reporting to him). We are in very good shape financially and based on his report, the club is looking into updating it’s timing computer as well as purchasing finish line banners (thanks Cheryl for looking into that!). The group also had a good discussion on inclusion of all racers including those with physical disabilities. The club is developing language to help all racers know they are welcome and that the club is willing to work with them to help them participate in events put on by the CVR.

The next meeting is August 28th. This will be a potluck beginning at 5:30 with the formal meeting beginning at 6:00 PM. We are looking for a place to hold the meeting. If anyone has a backyard they are will to share with the club for a couple of hours, please let me know.

Capital City Stampede
The Stampede is this weekend! The current weather report is for a partly sunny sky and temps in the upper 50s to lower 60s at race time. Sounds like perfect conditions.  Now is the time to sign up! Details below.

Membership Renewal – Reminder
For those of you who want to participate in the club race series, time is running out for your inclusion if you haven’t renewed your membership.
There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.
Not sure when your membership is due for renewal?
• check your membership card (contact Graham if you need a new one)
•check when your membership expires by logging in to the CVR website. (Here are the instructions  to log in)
• contact  Graham and he can confirm your renewal date

Trail Running
No trail run this week, the next run is 6/24 in Groton State Forest.

Have a favorite trail or a place you would like to explore with the group, sign up to lead a run. There are slots available in July and August.

You can sign up to Host or check the details and sign up for upcoming runs on the Google Sheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_Q5iTs68nmt0zl6WBomiWw3BSZyMWO6-18m1zlDHAYQ/edit#gid=0> or just send me an email mark@ormsbys.com

See you on the trails!

Other runs
FUN RUN: Day Light Saving time has happened and Spring is here!  People are showing up Tuesday evenings to enjoy roads and company through running and walking in rain or shine. The sunny weather is bringing out the runners. Come join us!

The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

Volunteers

  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
  • All of the remaining races for 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online using the link on the homepage, so please support CVR’s races and the race directors by volunteering now. Contact John Hackney with any questions about volunteering.

Race Series
Joe has updated the race series! According to Joe there were a couple of sudden changes in the standings with people joining the club at the last moment.

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.

Bear Swamp Run
The annual Bear Swamp Run is scheduled for July 8th.

100 on 100
Vermont’s 100 on 100 Relay Race is AUGUST 12, 2023

Round up your closest friends and prepare to take on 100 miles of scenic Vermont terrain–while you make an endless supply of memories! The 100 on 100 Relay is a challenging relay where friends converge from across the country to complete 100 miles together along Vermont’s historic Route 100. Push beyond your limits, lean on your teammates, and complete something extraordinary. Plus, we’ll be having an epic after-party at the finish line with delicious food, live music, and beer (21+).
Note for the 100 on 100:
I have a spot for the 100 on 100 but unfortunately we can’t do it due to a wedding that day. They will not refund us, but I can transfer the registration. I wanted to reach out and see anyone is interested in doing the race that hasn’t signed up yet that we could transfer to. Looks like the current price is $799, but we only paid $650, so they would get a deal too! If interested, you can reach me directly at this email. mlmannino@gmail.com
Thanks! Michele

Other News

So this is happening!

I am hoping to run my first 100 mile race at the Vermont 100 Endurance Race and at the same time raise some $$$ for a great cause. Some of you know the story of my eye injury and my mantra of “I GET to do this” so I feel incredibly lucky to be able to attempt this BIG scary goal. (If you don’t know my story, check out the link to my fundraising page below.)

This run feels extra special as all the proceeds from the race fees benefit Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports, which provides sports and recreational programs to people with all sorts of disabilities. The VT 100 is also the world’s first trail and ultra race to support and recognize “visually” and mobility impaired athletes with their own division. How cool is that!

I have the opportunity to raise funds for the race, so if you are feeling like supporting a great cause, here is your chance.

Thank you !!!
