CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Ira Gardner-Morse!

Greetings from a dryer Adamant,

As the state dries out, the footing improves. This was especially appreciated by the ninety-six (96) runners who completed the Barre Heritage 5K this past Saturday. I ran into Jackie and Darrell on Friday as they were heading out to mark the course. While Barre Quarries can be a bit of a maze, Jackie and Darrell had oodles of flags to keep everyone heading on the right path. Ben Taska, first male, of Barre VT ran the course in 20:33 for a 6:37 pace. Addie Hedges, first female, of Montpelier ran the course in 26:25 for an 8:31 pace.

The Twelfth Annual GA Caspian Challenge was this past Sunday. There were 77 competitors. There’s a race for walkers, a 5K, and a 6.8 mile loop around the lake. A quick look at the results shows John Valentine winning his age group in the 5K, Dot Martin winning her age group in the 5K as well as first woman overall in the 5K. John Hackney won his age group in the 6.8 mile race. Bob Murphy and Bob Howe also competed. I apologize if I missed anyone.

Saturday was also the Moosalamoo 36 mile ultra. For those of you who like the longer runs, they put on a great race. Always great food after the race.  Dylan Broderick was first female in a time of 6:41:57. Dylan was 2nd in the Catamount Ultra in June and first in the Runamuck 50K in April.

I was able to catch up with Jen Roberts at their big flood sale on Saturday morning. She was very appreciative of the club’s support.

Club Meeting
The next meeting is August 28th. This will be a potluck beginning at 5:30 with the formal meeting beginning at 6:00 PM. Don Singer has graciously agreed to host the meeting at his home located at 262 Hill St in Barre. (Thanks Don)

Please send me agenda items.

Vermont Special Olympics Track & Field
Do you have 2 hours/week and some running, jumping and/or throwing enthusiasm to share?
Please consider supporting local athletes by volunteering to help coach Central Vermont Special Olympics Track & Field this summer!
No special coaching experience is necessary, just availability and enthusiasm (although anyone with a little experience or interest in throws and jumps could help there).
The fun, low-key practices will be Tuesday evenings at the U-32 track for 8 weeks, starting next week (July 25) and leading up to the festive Fall Games on Sept. 16.
For more info on joining in, please contact Ellen Riley, jrervt@aol.com or Anne Treadwell, ac98@cornell.edu. Thank you!

Fun Runs
These are happening! Tuesday evenings, 5:30, starting behind the Department of Labor building on the bike path in Montpelier.

Other runs
The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

Volunteers

  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
  • All of the remaining races for 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online using the link on the homepage, so please support CVR’s races and the race directors by volunteering now. Contact John Hackney with any questions about volunteering.

Also
I hope all is well. I am the Race Director for the Vermont 100on100 Relay which is a 100-mile road race from Stowe to Okemo. The 2023 event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 12th. We are actively looking for volunteers at the event and wanted to see if any of the Central Vermont Runners were interested in assisting. We have three area’s which we are actively recruiting volunteers for. On event day, volunteers will be responsible for assisting with parking, checking runners in, and helping out with miscellaneous tasks. Below are the three areas we are looking for volunteers and the timeframes associated with each spot. Each spot will need approximately (3) volunteers. We will make a donation of $60 per volunteer to the Bethel Rotary. For example, if you provide (9) volunteers in total and cover all three spots, we will provide a $540 donation.
Granville Town Hall (Granville, VT) – 11:45 AM – 4:00 PM
Vermont Verde Antiques (Hancock, VT) – 12:15 PM – 4:30 PM
Rochester Elementary School (Rochester, VT) – 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Let me know if you have any questions and if anyone is interested, I can send over a link to sign up!
Thanks!
Evan Dolecki
