News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Maureen Carr, Joe Merrill, Michelle Risley, Jay Stewart, Mark Cioffi (new age group), Eamon Penney, & Gigi Guerin!

Greetings from a cooler Adamant,

On one of my walks around Sodom Pond (the Sodom Pond race is September 20th) last week I noticed a red maple leaf that had fallen on the road. Fall is coming. The days are growing shorter by almost three minutes a day.  The sun doesn’t rise until close to 6:00AM.  So, for those of you who like to get in an early run, remember your neon & reflective gear.

However, before fall arrives in all its color, we have some racing to do. The Berlin Pond 5 Miler takes place this Thursday, August 17. This is one of our classic CVR races, where competitive runners can test themselves on the long climb in the first mile and a half, and all runners can enjoy a chance to win a loaf of bread or a gift certificate from Red Hen.

Club Meeting
The next meeting is August 28th. This will be a potluck beginning at 5:30 with the formal meeting beginning at 6:00 PM. Don Singer has graciously agreed to host the meeting at his home located at 262 Hill St in Barre. (Thanks Don)

Please send me agenda items.

Coaching Opportunity:
Spaulding High School needs a new cross country coach.  If anybody is interested, the job is posted here: https://employer.schoolspring.com/job.cfm?jid=4323718   If anybody needs more information, they can contact Don Singer at dnldsngr@gmail.com.

Fun Run
“While the “Disaster Recovery Trailer City” blocks the Fun Run usual starting line, the group is continuing to meet in the same parking lot and run on Green Mountain Dr past the original Fun Run start at the Liquor Control Building to access the path. The distances end up the same as if you start at the usual start. This week we had a special appearance from John Martin holding court in his wheelchair. Darrel can send the photo of the fairly large group.

Other runs
The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

Volunteers

  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
  • All of the remaining races for 2023 are open and accepting volunteers online using the link on the homepage, so please support CVR’s races and the race directors by volunteering now. Contact John Hackney with any questions about volunteering.

Race Series
Joe has updated the race series. Check it out on the website.

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.

Race Results/reviews:

The 100 on 100 was held this past weekend. There were 77 teams. The winning team “Marvel Universe” covered the course in 11:02:02 for an average pace of 6:38. I was alerted that members Rima Carlson, Brian Carlson, & Jim Flint ran as part of a team that finished in 15:37:02. I’d love to hear if other CVR members ran it.

The 5K Tomato Trot was also held this weekend. I haven’t seen results yet so don’t know how many CVR members ran/walked it.

Up Coming Events.

The Summer 6 Pack
The Summer 6 Pack. This is our 3rd summer producing this series. We move the races around to various locations, mostly in the Burlington area but we’re open to any business who would like us to set up a race at their location. Barr Hill is hosting on Wednesday August 23. We use an “open” start line concept, runners can start any time 4:45pm-6:00pm. Those who want more of a traditional race experience should plan on starting at 4:45, but we’ve heard from a lot of newbies that being able to be at a race with a smaller group or solo is less intimidating and it’s been a nice way to introduce some new people to running in races. The courses are accurately measured and we use chip timing. We’ll be at Barr Hill around 3:45 raceday for packet pickup and race day registration. The race is open to runners and walkers, but unfortunately dogs and baby joggers cannot take part.

For the Barr Hill S6P race we’re also offering a Virtual option. All proceeds from all virtual entries as well as any donations will go to Montpelier Alive. We’ll also be including in that donation any proceeds from live runners after we break even, which is usually around 60 entrants.

Our goal with these races is to provide an organized outlet for runners and walkers to get a little midweek exercise and a good race effort – and to bring business to businesses who have supported the races we produce year round. Registration is open at https://www.runvermont.org/races/summersixpack/, and if anyone has any questions they can reach me at joe@runvermont.org.
