News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Simon Bradley, Richarda Ericson, Steve Hill, Scott Widmer, Jordan Chapin, & Christopher Meyer!

Greetings from another sunny day in Adamant, 🌞

A big Thank you to Don and Sherri for hosting the club meeting last night. In summary, the club is doing well financially. Well, enough to increase our annual fall grants to local schools from $300 to $400. Ann Bushey and Don both spoke of their experience coaching and how much the money has helped their programs. They both spoke to the need for decent running shoes for some of their runners. The club will be addressing this issue further.

There have been five club or race series races since our last meeting. Those were the Capital City, Birdland 5K, Bear Swamp, Barre Heritage, and Berlin Pond. All have gone well according to those present at them.

There was a discussion regarding race directors collaborating with other clubs or businesses. The importance of working with clubs and businesses that are aligned with the club’s mission was discussed. A statement addressing this will be added to the race director’s handbook.

A committee was formed to develop the club’s race schedule for next year. This group will look at all of the races we ran this year as well as the race series events and decide what the club will offer and when. The Upper Valley Running Club has expressed interest in having one of our races in their series as well as one of their races in our series.  The members of the committee are Heather T, Darrell L, Bob M., Donna S., Joe M., and me. Please send your thoughts on this subject to any of the members.

Speaking of next year, it looks like we’re in need of a new location for registrations and race results tracking for the New Year’s Eve 5K. This is due to the water damage to the state office building (The Pavillion) we’ve used previously and probably won’t be repaired in time for the race. If you have any suggestions, please send them too me or Bob Murphy.

We are looking into club clothing/swag for purchase. There is more to come on that subject.

A tentative date for the next club meeting is end of October or beginning of November. This will be an important meeting as it’s when we’ll finalize the race schedule for next year.

Fun Run
While the “Disaster Recovery Trailer City” blocks the Fun Run usual starting line, the group is continuing to meet in the same parking lot and run on Green Mountain Dr past the original Fun Run start at the Liquor Control Building to access the path. The distances end up the same as if you start at the usual start.

Other runs
The Runderachievers (A Northfield running group) held a celebration for Kim (club vice-president) and Matt for their soon-to-be-born runner.

The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

Race Results/reviews:

Race to the Top of Vermont
“The Race to the Top of Vermont took place on Sunday, August 27, on the Mt Mansfield Toll Road. It’s a race that takes the participants longer to get down than to get up. Run Course Records are held by Eric Blake of West Hartford, CT  in a time of 32:51.3 in 2013.
Liz Stephen of Montpelier, VT   holds the women’s record set in 2014 of 37:15.9.
There were a number of CVR members in the race. You can find the results here: 23 Race To The Top Of Vermont (Run Age Groups).pdf – Google Drive

Island Vines 10k/5k
This is scheduled for Sunday Sept 17, 9:00am, and the host is the SnowFarm Vineyard in South Hero. This is the 10th annual. I don’t think this race is well known, and that’s a shame because it’s a fantastic venue and a real nice course on West Shore Rd with decent post-race amenities including beer/wine, food, music. Out of all our races, I’d say this is the one people tend to hang out for the longest afterwards, at least in comparison to the time it takes to run the race. Registration currently open at https://runsignup.com/Race/VT/SouthHero/IslandVines10K

Northeast Kingdom Marathon and Half Marathon Sept 16th

Sodom Pond 4 Miler
The Sodom Pond 4 Miler is scheduled for September 20th. Similar to Berlin Pond but a mile shorter! A great little race here in Adamant.

Will Robens reports that registration for Leaf Peepers is now open! October 1st!
