CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Maryke Gillis, Jeffrey Johnson, Donna Smyers, & Ruth Blauwiekel (new age group)!

Greetings from a foggy Adamant morning,

I’m putting out this week’s newsletter earlier for personal reasons.

It’s September! Wow! It seems like just a few weeks ago we were putting on the Capital City Stampede. However, it must be September as the Northfield 5K Run/Walk & Kid’s mile was this past weekend. Here’s Jim Flint’s recap of the event.

complete results are here: northfield-5k-combined-2023 (cvrunners.org)

Recap – 44th Annual Northfield Footraces

CVR’s community partnerships showed their strength on September 2. Volunteers from CVR and the Vermont Senior Games Association worked side-by-side with Norwich University cadets, the Central Vermont Amateur Radio Club, Northfield Ambulance, and the Northfield Police Department to ensure a safe and successful event. Northfield Savings Bank and Darn Tough Socks provided generous age group awards.  NSB volunteers staffed the 5k water station. The New England 65-Plus Runners Club sponsored the race refreshments.

CVR member Mike Giberti won the 5k race in 17:34. Jess Marini of GMAA won the women’s division in 19:40. CVR’s Addie Hedges was the runner-up for the women, in 21:10. In addition to Mike (M30-34) and Addie (F20-24), CVR age group winners included Christine Guggenberger (F25-29), Peter Maurais (M35-39), Meg Valentine (F40-44), Katie Humphrey (F45-49), Doreen Audette (F50-54), Anne Treadwell (F55-59), Dot Martin (F60-64), Ann Bushey (F65-69), Tim Noonan (M65-69), Elizabeth McCarthy (F70-74), and Charlie Windisch (M70-74).

In an exciting finish, Newton Baker, 81, edged out John Pelton, 84, by one second to win the M80-84 age group in the 5k Power Walk. Newton was among 19 CVR members (ages 50 and up) to win a Vermont Senior Association gold, silver, or bronze medal in the state championship 5k run or walk. Jackson Boright (6:20), from Maine, and Irie Miller (7:04), from Montpelier, were the fastest finishers among 42 boys and girls in the one-mile kids race. The Northfield races raised over $3,500 to support youth and senior running programs.

The timing and finish line teams, led by John Hackney and Donna Smyers, accurately recorded three races with overlapping finishers. Jackie Jancaitis headed up the course safety team. George Moltz led the registration team. Working together, the teams kept the finish line open until the last 5k finisher, Adam Ortiz, crossed the line in 1:39:37. Adam was among a group of nine veterans from The Veterans Place, in Northfield, who participated in the 5k as our guests. Donations of $281, raised from fellow race participants, were presented to The Veterans Place at the awards ceremony. Thank you to all involved for a successful community event!

Fun Run
Bob Murphy wrote me that the FEMA encampment has left the Dept of Labor parking lot! Fun Runs can now resume their normal starting point!  Yay, and the weather looks great for Tuesday, September 5th! These are a fun & casual way to get in a few miles and make some new friends & connections.

Other runs
The Long Trail Running Club has Thursday evening runs in Chittenden County, starting and finishing at a brew pub. It’s a fun group, and they usually find good routes.  Routes are 4-6 miles long; the group stops from time to time to wait for the caboose to catch up; there’s also often a group that walks. Check out the group at www.meetup.com/longtrailrunning

3rd Annual AirPeyton Memorial Pediatric Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run (runsignup.com)

Island Vines 10k/5k
This is scheduled for Sunday Sept 17, 9:00am, and the host is the SnowFarm Vineyard in South Hero. This is the 10th annual. I don’t think this race is well known, and that’s a shame because it’s a fantastic venue and a real nice course on West Shore Rd with decent post-race amenities including beer/wine, food, music. Out of all our races, I’d say this is the one people tend to hang out for the longest afterwards, at least in comparison to the time it takes to run the race. Registration currently open at https://runsignup.com/Race/VT/SouthHero/IslandVines10K
