Welcome from a sunny and mostly white Adamant,
I have mixed feelings as I look out my window and see areas of grass poking through the thin layer of snow in my yard. It’s January and the snowbanks should be a couple of feet tall. Winter is when I typically mix up my running with skiing or Nordic skating. While I’m sad that those things are happening around here at the moment, I appreciate the lack of snow as I recover. I have good memories of long winter club runs down snowy lanes followed by hot coffee and conversation about the best way to cleat your running shoes (I still think it’s sheet metal screws with a panhead). While I miss those activities. I also appreciate that the CVR winter runs are continuing this year thanks to the organization of Heather.
Last week I spoke briefly on the importance of our volunteers with our races. In particular I highlighted the challenge of having runners cross State Street in Montpelier. What I left out was that it was Greg Wight, later joined by Greg Gerdel and Ali Lopez, who first stepped out into the intersection to manage the vehicular traffic at State & Bailey. Thank you Greg and Ali! The club will be looking at this issue later in the year.

Winter Runs are HERE!
Winter Group Runs (WGRs) are here! Last weekend’s WGR took a great group of folks out on the back roads of Calais for some hill work (whether or not hill work was what they wanted!). Thank you to Mack for hosting – the muffins are still being talked about!
This weekend we return to beloved Middlesex, basing the run around Red Hen, a Middlesex institution and not to be missed – thanks for the suggestion, host Donna Smyers! More info and sign-up sheet are here. We will send out more details in a Thursday email blast to the WGR listserv- if you were not on it last year but want to join that list, email Donna Smyers or Heather Tomlins.
Race Series

Trail Running
Mark informed me that trail running has gone into hibernation for the winter. For those who like to be on trails year-round, I encourage you to look into a set of micro-spikes from Onion River Outdoors. The folks there can also suggest a wide range of trails to explore and how best to do it.
Volunteers
- The Volunteer List by Race Number on the homepage of the website shows all volunteers for this year and the race at which they volunteered.
- The Alphabetic Volunteer List on the homepage of the website is the list that establishes eligibility for the annual dinner and for the race series.
- Anyone that has volunteered for a race this year should check to confirm that they are on the list.
- Please have anyone with questions about the lists contact me by email at info@cvrunners.org or check with the race director of the race at which they volunteered.

Millstone Madness Snowshoe Race
Want a chance to win a pair of snowshoes? It might not look like snowshoe racing weather yet but the snow should be coming. It’s a crazy race, 3 miles with unpredictable snow conditions, and who knows how much time anyone will have trained on snow.
There will be a beautiful well marked course, fire with marshmallows, and hot cocoa. I am extremely excited that we have a new sponsor, Dion Snowshoes. They have donated a pair of snowshoes to raffle off to participants!

CVR Equipment Use
Anyone wanting to use equipment send Sal (and cc myself) a request that includes 1) Date equipment to be removed from the shed, 2) Itemized list of equipment being removed; including quantities, 3) Date equipment will be returned to the shed. Please send Sal (and cc the club president) and email to let us know when the equipment has been returned.
The Club Timing Clock
If you use the club timing clock, it’s important it be returned the next day. The clock is used for a lot of events other than club races. It’s club policy that if the clock is requested for a non-CVR event, a CVR member must be present to ensure proper handling.
