News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Brynn Bushey, Darrel Lasell, & Phoebe Sherriff!

Greetings from a thankful November in Adamant,

It’s Thanksgiving week so I’m getting this newsletter out early before I head out to enjoy time with family and friends. I am thankful I am able to do that. I wish all of you the best this week.

There was some serious racing this past Saturday for the third Fallen Leaves 5K. Sixty-one runners completed the course with the first sixteen runners all under twenty minutes as compared to last week when there were fifty-one runners and only nine runners under twenty minutes. Additionally, the first-place male, John Benner from Burlington, blistered the course in 14:48. That is a 4:46 pace and believed to be a course record! The first-place female, Addie Hedges of Montpelier, ran the course in 20:30 or a 6:36 pace.

Jennifer Dickinson reports that the signup for the New Years Eve race https://cvrunners.org/cvr-races/nye-5k/  is open. This is our starting event for the 2024 CVR/ORO race series. As a result of flooding, the course will be changed this year. If you are not planning on running, Jennifer is always looking for volunteers. With this race through the streets of Montpelier, helping with traffic to keep everyone safe is always welcome.

The final standings for the 2023 race series are posted. Overall, 98 CVR members participated in the race series races this year, with a total of 280 member-races. Of those 98, 50 volunteered for the club and were eligible for the final standings. The top six honorable mention racers all fulfilled their volunteer commitments. Thank you Joe Merrill for keeping track of the stats all season long!

We will hold our club awards and appreciation dinner the end of January. We’re looking for a place to hold it. Donna and I would appreciate suggestions for possible locations. We’d like to hold it in the Barre/Montpelier/Waterbury area.

I’ve received a few suggestions on how to spend our club money during the coming year. Thank you for those and I’d appreciate more so give it a thought and drop me a line at andresen41@gmail.com

At the March meeting we’ll also be electing new officers. We have one person interested in the vice-president position. Graham is also stepping down so let me know if you’d be interested in helping with membership.

Winter runs are coming! Heather is getting organized to get us up and out the door with weekly runs! Keep your eyes out for an email from her in the near future.

Trail Running
If you’re interested, a group runs up Spruce Mt in Plainfield Sunday mornings. They start at 7. Keep wearing your orange.

Fun Run
Official fun runs are over for the year however, there continues to be a turnout on Tuesday evenings to get in a few miles.  The days are getting shorter (less than 10 hours), however bright clothing and lights will make for a safer run.

Membership Renewal – Reminder
There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.
Not sure when your membership is due for renewal?
• check your membership card (contact Graham if you need a new one)
•check when your membership expires by logging in to the CVR website. (Here are the instructions  to log in)
• contact  Graham and he can confirm your renewal date

Volunteers
 Race Series
The race series is done! Check the website for final standings!

REMINDER: All volunteers get a free dinner at the club awards dinner.

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.

Race Results/reviews:
Jim Flint reported he “enjoyed the last three days in Philadelphia after traveling down on the “sunset train” from Rutland on Thursday. Grateful for time with Alison and Nick who also came out to cheer me on yesterday at the Rothman 8k. Ran a minute faster than last year to place 200th of 3,943 participants, and fifth in the M60-64 age group.”

Nick Persampieri reported “Last Sunday, I closed out my racing season at the BAA Half Marathon- a beautiful, challenging course from Boston’s Franklin Park to near the Back Bay Fens and back. As a 64 year old, I finished second in the Men’s 60-64 age group, running 1:29:24- nearly 30 seconds faster than I ran in the rain last year. I believe that this is the fastest race I have ever run on an age-graded basis. This was aided by cool weather- 31F at the start. I also defended my BAA Distance Medley AG title from last year- cumulative time for 5k, 10k and half marathon. I am now taking a break from running and looking forward to xc skiing.”

 Up Coming Events.
