News and Notes

CVR birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Susan Hackney, Morgan Lloyd, Peter Luyckx, Jamie Shanley, & Ben Feinson!

Greetings from a reflecting Adamant!

This past Sunday was our annual awards dinner. There’s a sizeable group of people who work to make this event happen. The planning began at the last club meeting when a possible date was chosen by those in attendance. This year Donna Smyers stepped up to locate a location for the dinner. This involved following up on suggested locations and numerous phone calls with the final decision made in consultation with the executive committee (John Valentine, Darragh Ellerson, Kim Caldwell, Bob Murphy, Cheryl Lasell, and myself). The location this year was the Canadian Club. Judging by those at the dinner, this was a great choice. The space was nice, convenient to most people, the food was really good (the chef worked with Donna to address all dietary needs), and the cost was lowest offered of all the spaces looked at. Preparation also required working with Joe Merrill who handled tracking of the Race Series and co-presented the awards. Additionally, John Hackney (the club webmaster) provided information towards the awards.

The awards dinner is a great event as it honors the hard work people have put into their running. In addition to the Race Series winners, the dinner also honors two people through the Spirit of the Club Award and the David Ellerson Award, who have made considerable contribution to the club over the past year. These are not easy decisions as there are a number of people who make considerable contributions of time to the club every year. The Spirit of the Club Award went to Jackie Jancaitis for her work with the Race Directors (as well as being one herself), ensuring we have useful first aid kit at our races, and volunteering at numerous races, and just an infectious positive attitude towards the club. Unfortunately, Jackie had to leave before the presentation so a photo will come at a later date.

Photos of age group winners are posted on the club Facebook page.

The other award given was the David Ellerson Award. This is given to a person based on their volunteer work with the club. This year it went to Barb Flint, who’s not a runner but volunteer at a number of events and photographed them for the club Facebook page.

In addition to our running awards, the group also got sing Happy Birthday to Jim and Bob to celebrate their January 21st birthdays!

Winter Group Runs
The Red Hen is always the place to gather when the temps are threatening to go below zero – I imagine a bowl of soup and some hot coffee was a very welcome treat for our intrepid group that came out last weekend to run! This Saturday, following the expected light thaw we’re getting this week, the group will gather in Waterbury for some runs suggested by host Bob Emmons. More info and sign-up sheet are here. We will send out more details in a Thursday email blast to the WGR listserv.

Also Heather is still looking for hosts into February and beyond! If you’re interested, sign up on the google sheet here. Note that hosting doesn’t mean you must have the crew over to your home (although that’s certainly welcome!) – it can also mean suggesting a run and meeting spot (ideally a place with a coffee shop or general store nearby for after). So if you have a run you’d like to suggest sign up to “host” and Heather will reach out ahead of your selected date to work out the details. Thank you!

Trail Running
If you’re interested, a group runs up Spruce Mt in Plainfield Sunday mornings. They start at 7. Keep wearing your orange.

Fun Runs
Official fun runs are over for the year however, there continues to be a turnout on Tuesday evenings to get in a few miles.  The days are now up to 9 1/2 hours in length with the days adding over 2 minutes in length each day! Lights and bright clothing are still important.  Keep visible, Keep safe.

Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.

Running Pod Cast
Tim Noonan recommended a pod cast to me while at the awards dinner. It’s called “Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara” It’s two Olympic runners sitting down and talking running. I just started it and am finding it engaging. Worth a listen.
