News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: John Goodwin, Drew McConville, Diane Jones, Rob McDougall, April Farnham, & Ella Bradley (new age group)!

Greetings from a changing Adamant!

I believe I joined CVR in 2008 after moving back to Vermont from Colorado. At the time I was a single father working full time and raising two boys (15 & 12 at the time) after the death of their mother. Running was my exercise and social life rolled into one as I didn’t have a lot of time for anything else. I didn’t attend any meetings or help with any events other than to volunteer, so I was eligible for the race series. I would glance through the club newsletter (published quarterly at that point). It wasn’t until I met Dot that I began to be more involved with the club. Dot is someone who has been involved with the club almost from day one. Running has been a major part of her life so volunteering (something she does a lot of for many different organizations) to help the club was a no-brainer. She is the club member who suggested the Spirit of the Club Award to recognize the volunteer work of club members. So, given the amount of volunteering already going on in our home, when Bob Emmons contacted me about taking on the role of club president, I said yes.

Being club president hasn’t been a lot of work but rather a fair amount of responsibility. There are 300+ club members, 1500+ event entrants, sponsors, website, equipment, and a host of other details that go into keeping this club moving. Fortunately, there is a great core of members who are kind enough to let me know what I need to do and when. Additionally, this core does a fantastic job of taking care of 97% of the details.

However, change is a part of life and that includes who volunteers for positions in the club.  My tenure as president of this club is coming to a close. In March the club will need to pick a new president and vice-president. I currently have one person who has stepped forward, but we are in need of another. This club is doing well, and at the same time I’d love to see someone come in with some ideas to help the club to continue to grow. So, please consider volunteering. These are part of the executive committee and assist with decisions.

Thank you.

Winter Group Runs

Thank you to Bob Emmons for hosting this past weekend’s January thaw themed run in Waterbury! A great turnout and enjoyment of the Black Cap coffeeshop. This weekend the WGR will be un-hosted from Montpelier since this Saturday is also the club’s first 2024 race, the Millstone Madness snowshoe race (there’s still time to sign up!). More info and the WGR sign-up sheet are here. We will send out more details in a Thursday email blast to the WGR listserv.

Also Heather is still looking for hosts into February and beyond! If you’re interested, sign up on the google sheet here. Note that hosting doesn’t mean you must have the crew over to your home (although that’s certainly welcome!) – it can also mean suggesting a run and meeting spot (ideally a place with a coffee shop or general store nearby for after). So if you have a run you’d like to suggest sign up to “host” and Heather will reach out ahead of your selected date to work out the details. Thank you!

Trail Running
If you’re interested, a group runs up Spruce Mt in Plainfield Sunday mornings. They start at 7. Keep wearing your orange.

Fun Runs
Official fun runs are over for the year however, there continues to be a turnout on Tuesday evenings to get in a few miles.  Day length is now closing in on 10 hours with each day adding an additional 2 1/2 minutes. Now if we could just get a little more sunshine…  Keep visible, Keep safe.

There’s a link to RunReg at https://cvrunners.org/join-cvr (“JOIN CVR”). This page also has a printable form for those who prefer to mail their renewal.
Renewing with a multi-year membership means fewer year-end renewals for you and less administration for the club.

Web Site
I know we’ve had members running some races outside the local area that I’d like to hear more about. Reach out to John with the details so we can share your experience with the entire club.

Send your running related stories and articles to John at info@cvrunners.org to be published on the CVR website.
