News and Notes – January 25 – February 7, 2026
Millstone Madness is coming – February 7! Volunteers (and Participants!) needed for the upcoming Millstone Madness Snowshoe race. Race Director Jackie Jancaitis is particularly in need of folks to support on timing, but has a few other roles to fill. Please sign up today on the CVR website or email Jackie at JackieMS08@yahoo.com. You can also register to race here – price goes up by $5 tomorrow, and online registration closes 2/5. Day-of registration is available!
- Paul Mailman registration is open! April 18 may seem far away, but it’s a great time to start thinking about training for the 10 miler (5K available too!). More on this race as it approaches but sign up today if you know you’re going to compete! Register here. Meanwhile, volunteers are also needed – Volunteer using RunSignup at RSU Volunteers OR on the CVR homepage at https://cvrunners.org OR email John Hackney at info@cvrunners.org.
See many of you this Thursday for CVR Annual Volunteer and Awards Dinner at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier! An evening to celebrate our volunteers, reflect on another great year, and make awards to our CVR/ORO Series winners and other special awards. If you missed the RSVP deadline but realize you can attend after all, just reply to this email – we can usually accommodate a few stragglers. This year at least the snow storm is making its appearance before our event so travel should be smooth for folks coming from a bit further out! The event starts around 5pm, with dinner around 6, and program starting between 6:30-7pm. We’ll have you out the door by 8!
- 2026 CVR/ORO Race Series Scoring Changes! This year’s series launched with the NYE 5K, and this year we made some changes to the rules, after lengthy discussions in the race committee and at the most recent club meeting. The updated scoring approach for this year’s series can be found on the website here. We ultimately made the update to simplify the scoring system, to bring it in line with the scoring systems used by other regional running clubs for their race series (such as the Upper Valley Run Club and the Adirondack Running Club), and to encourage more participation across the slate of races. We hope this results in a more straight-forward point system!
Winter Group Runs – hosts needed for future dates! Get details on the weekly runs as they come together on the Google sheet here. Note that WGRs will be taking off at 9:30am on Saturdays this winter (with Sundays as possible snow-days if Saturday weather looks particularly unfavorable). Sign up to host at this google sheet, or email Jessica Ball, our WGR coordinator, at jessica.petrino@gmail.com.
- Email Heather or Donna ASAP if you not getting our Thursday WGR emails! We send out a Thursday blast with details of the coming WGR in a special note. You can also always find details on the google sheet above!
- This Saturday, January 31, we will be in Waterbury – thanks to Jim Rohr for hosting, and appreciate everyone’s flexibility to move this run. I hope everyone enjoyed some indoor pursuits this weekend!

Yet another birthday WGR, this time for Chris Andresen in Adamant
- Reminder – Fun Runs have officially ended! But if your Tuesday evenings feel empty, don’t fear – an intrepid group continues to meet at the Bear Naked Growler on Tuesdays for a run along the bike path at 5:30pm. Wear your reflective gear and headlamps – be seen, be safe!
- Wanted! CVR is looking for a few volunteers to take on longer-term roles with the club. If any of the below are of interest, just reply to this email and let me know!
- Club Treasurer – this is a board position with an indefinite term. Are you someone who has experience with accounting (or wants to learn!), is good with numbers, and is pretty organized? Bonus if you have experience with Quickbooks online. Opportunity to shadow John Valentine to understand the accounts and way the club finances are run.
- Membership Manager – We have recently moved our membership functions to RunSignup, and we need someone to take on responsibility for the system. RunSignup provides a very well organized system including a variety of membership types, email functions, club store, webpage design, and reports. Responsibilities include management of new memberships, membership renewals, routine maintenance of member personal data, and generation of emails to members when necessary. The Membership Manager should be comfortable using online applications, but no programming knowledge is necessary. The time commitment is generally a few hours per month. If you are interested in volunteering for this important club role, please email John Hackney at: info@cvrunners.org
- Youth Running Grants Coordinator – in Spring and Fall, this person will solicit applications from local schools or youth running organizations and then present the funding requests for a vote by club members. A key role to help connect the club with local youth running needs and fulfil part of our mission. If you’re interested, we can connect you to Ann Bushey, former coordinator, for more information on the time commitment and to share contacts!
- Communications Coordinator – have you received this newsletter and thought, I have feedback on how to design or structure it! or, that would be a fun way to get involved, I wonder if they need someone to help promote club events…! If this sounds like you, and you have a flair for the written word and light design (trust me, the templates available at your fingertips make that part a breeze) and have a few hours every two weeks, we’d love to bring you on to support in getting a newsletter out, or help with other club promotion activities!
Member benefits – don’t forget your benefits! Including the new offering from the Sanctuary in Northfield, all details on benefits and how to access them can be found here.
