News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: amazingly there are no CVR birthdays this week!

Hello from Montpelier,

This morning I went out for a short run (I’m on a comeback after a long absence) and saw buds popping on the lilac bushes in a neighbor’s front yard, then noticed some daffodils blooming further along and a few more pops of color in the grass. Despite the barely-above-freezing temperature, it was heartening to see the return of growing things and the true harbingers of spring. Along the bike path in town, I also happened to run into CVR Vice President Tim Noonan on his bike, less than 24 hours after his 22nd appearance at the Boston Marathon. We chatted a bit about the race, and I was glad to get to congratulate him on another Boston finish! For those who don’t know Tim (or for those who do), check out a great feature from the VT Digger this week on Tim’s love of running and his impressive streak of marathon finishes throughout a strong running career. Congratulations Tim, and to all the CVR Boston finishers (I know at least a few were there, including Anne Treadwell and Anna Milkowski – nice work all! If you want to tell your Boston story, or any running story, let me know and we can feature it!).

Read on for updates on this past weekend’s Paul Mailman race results, learn about youth grants (applications open through April 19), how to volunteer for ORO’s Muddy Onion, updates on trail running, and CVR’s Green Up Day plans – among other news. Please feel free to reach out anytime with information you’d like to see featured, it’s been fun to hear from so many members in the last few weeks!

Warmly,
Heather Tomlins

Recent Race Results – CVR’s Paul Mailman 5K & 10 Miler

Early morning rain on Saturday gave way to partly sunny skies, with some wind gusts to give our Paul Mailman runners wings (or a challenge, depending on which direction you were headed)! We had 91 finishers across both races, and some impressive results. Our 5K overall winner, CVR member Andy Frakes of Marshfield, finished in 18:23, only 26 seconds shy of a course record for the M30-39 age group. Our first female finisher, Kasie Enman of Huntington, finished just behind Andy in 18:42. The 5K full results can be found here. For the 10 miler, 17-year-old Jay Borland of Montpelier dominated the field with a 56:56 finish, a little over 3 minutes ahead of our 2nd place finisher Sebastian McCabe of Fairfax. Our first female finisher was Madeline McKeever of Montpelier in 1:07:23. The full results for the 10 miler can be found here.

Thank you to Race Directors Kari Bradley and John Hackney for putting on another memorable iteration of this race (a CVR institution!). Also thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help – whether as course marshals, aid station volunteers, registration, timing, generally keeping things moving – we can’t do these races without you!

Mark Howard is starting to get this year’s trail runs organized but he needs your help! If you’d like to be a host, please take a look at the sign up sheet here. Tuesday Fun Runs
Tuesday Fun Runs set off every Tuesday at 5:30pm from the DoL parking lot. We are currently discussing how to incorporate a more regular social aspect to the Tuesday Fun Runs – this plan will evolve as the spring/summer unfolds but we’ll start with meeting after the Fun Run on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Bear Naked Growler (we will check back in May as their schedule has been a little hard to track, but we’ll update on the meeting location the week before) and on the last Tuesday at Penzo’s Pizza. Fun Runs will still start/end at the DoL parking lot though. For the month of April:
