News and Notes

CVR Birthdays this week:

Happy Birthday to: Mark Howard, Gary Kessler, Tara Cariano, Riley Carlson, Charlotte Meyer, Kimberly Kilroy, Sean Sheehan (new age group!), and Lucy Price!

Hello from Montpelier,

I got the opportunity to take the lead on the race results using the computer program Run Score this past weekend at the Adamant Half Marathon and Relay (results below!). Working at the finish line alongside John Valentine and Bob Murphy (on the Time Machines) as well as Stephanie Helburn and Dot Helling tracking bib numbers for finishers (and Merill Creagh and Sigh Searles handing out medals), we got to talking about the mechanics of the timing system we use and musing about whether the club should look at other systems again, like chip timing, that had been researched in the past but scrapped for cost or other reasons. At the same time, there is something special in the way the club is able to put on races at low cost by leaning on volunteers for essential functions like accurate timing and finish line management. This is a topic worth discussing and considering (no decisions were made while on the side of the road trying to correct timing errors in Run Score!), so if you have opinions or perspective, consider bringing those ideas to the next club meeting June 10th! I’ve added this to the agenda list, among other items.

Meanwhile, below find more updates on the Adamant Half results, our next club meeting updates and agenda items, youth grants report out, and more!

As always, feel free to reach out anytime with information you’d like to see featured, I’ve gotten lots of tidbits to share, and also welcome photos and stories from your adventures out in the running world. Looking forward to hearing more!

Warmly,
Heather Tomlins

CVR Race Results – Adamant Half Marathon and Relay

This past weekend’s annual Adamant Half Marathon and Relay was a resounding success – a beautiful day, cool and sunny, plus a record number of participants with 113 finishers (which includes the finisher for each of our 6 relay teams), and multiple records being broken. Ezra Merrill-Triplett, 18, smoked the competition to set a new course record (1:22:24, besting the prior record of 1:23:50 set by Stephen Larock in 2021), while also setting the new record for the male under 19 age group previously set by Beckett Markosian in 2019 by almost 14 minutes. Meanwhile, our overall individual female winner was Dylan Broderick, 33, coming in at a very speedy 1:37:58, setting a new record for her age group (W30-39) previously set by Elizabeth Markinson in 2022 at 1:41:17. Our fastest relay team was Amanda Watters and Mike McGrane, finishing in a combined time of 1:31:18 (also setting a course record for the relay, previously held by Aaron Schwartz and Francesca Garofolo in 1:38:57). On top of that, our 2nd place overall finisher, Maxwell English, set a new age group record (M40-49) in 1:24:34, previously set by Gabriel McGann in 2021 of 1:32:56.

Congratulations to Ezra, Dylan, Amanda, and Mike, as well as all age group winners and overall participants for finishing this challenging race. An impressive field – not just in number but in finishing times, with nearly half of finishers coming in at or under 2 hours, on top of all those records being shattered. Full results can be found on the CVR website here, and also featured in the Times Argus this week here. Race competitor Ira O’Meara-Costello also wrote a fantastic article about the race in the Hardwick Gazette which can be found here. Congrats to all finishers, and thank you as always to our volunteers at the aid stations, registration, finish, serving up soups, sweeping the course, and everything in between. This race requires a lot of hands on deck to make it a success – thank you!

Recent Race Results – Members out and About in Other Races

Congratulations to Don Singer for several accomplishments in the Lincoln (Nebraska) Marathon on May 5th! First, he came in third in his age group (M60-64), in a time of 3:55:35. Also – this was his first marathon since hip replacement in August 2024. Last, but not least – this was his 36th out of races in all 50 states. Excellent efforts, Don!

Fun Runs –> Other Runs –>Trail Season!

Trail Running – first run will be May 25 at Cow Hill in Peacham Town Forest
Mark Howard is starting to get this year’s trail runs organized but he needs your help! If you’d like to be a host, please take a look at the sign up sheet here, hosts still needed for later June and into July. The first trail run will be hosted by Natalie Chapell in just under two weeks on May 25 for a run on Cow Hill in Peacham Town Forest. Mark has also started a Google Group as a way to get information out – if you’d like to receive the Trail Running details every week (separate from this update), please email Mark.

Tuesday Fun Runs
Tuesday Fun Runs set off every Tuesday at 5:30pm from the DoL parking lot. Starting this month we will be trying something new. We will alternate meeting up at a local restaurant/watering hole with a second meetup in the month at a local park, potluck-style! Since the weather is still making up its mind about what season it is, we’ll start with an indoor option for the 2nd Tuesday, and celebrate late spring with an outdoor gathering in Hubbard Park for the last Tuesday. Special thanks to Merill Creagh for her legwork to make park meetups happen! And thanks to Darrel Lassel for continuing to be our local social organizer too. For May, the remaining meetup schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 28: Hubbard Park (see some Do’s and Don’ts on the Park Gathering here)
  • As a note, for these post-Fun Run gatherings, Fun Run will still start/end at the DoL parking lot, and participants who wish to join the gatherings will be responsible for getting themselves to the meeting spot!

Youth Grants Report Out
Our Spring Grants program was a great success. CVR donated to nine area youth running and track clubs, from Craftsbury, Barre, Montpelier, Northfield, Williamstown, and East Montpelier. The total amount of funds donated to youth running was $3,350.00! Clubs are using the money for a wide variety of things such as shoes, water bottles, snacks, T-shirts, entry fees, and scholarships for programs. CVR definitely makes a difference! Thank you to youth grants coordinator Ann Bushey for continuing to champion youth running and helping facilitate the grants process.
